Dick, I've sent some of this to you before but I'll send it again, including some additional info. Sesquicentennial Broadcaster, Sept. 1969, page 5 "In the early times, Glen Allen was known as Stewart's Gap. The community was later called Glen Allen, supposedly after two engineers who worked with the railroad company." Additional information from this full-page article: The STEWART family is listed in early Methodist church records. The page on which this article appears has a photo of the Henry STEWART family. Included are wife, Mary Jane, children James H. STEWART; Lillie Stewart SMITH; Mrs. ANTHONY; Ola Stewart ASTON; Frank STEWART. Henry STEWART operated a sand pit, one of the first businesses in Glen Allen. In July, 1969, the mayor was Nash NELSON. Council members were W. H. STEWART; Joe STEWART; W. E. (Edwin) PATTERSON; P. A. HOLLINGSWORTH and Caldwell HOLLINGSWORTH. Lastly, my 88-year-old cousin who has lived her entire life in Glen Allen, confirms that it was once known as Stewart's Gap. One caveat: When I searched the US Geological Survey site, I found no listing for Stewart's Gap in Fayette or Marion counties. So, you'll need to decide whether to choose the recollections of those who lived there or the official government website. Best regards, Monya Fayette Co. I have some more information here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/emerson_robinson/message/144 But I haven't confirmed any of it yet. Do you know Jimmie Nell Meadors? She is a Scott researcher, but obviously did some work on the Williams line, too. I am descended from Stephen Thomas Williams, Sr. through his daughter Jane Williams (m. Peter Martin Scott). She would be your Reubin's great-aunt, according to Joel's information. Joel, it sounds like you have more on the original Stephen Thomas Williams than I have. Jessie Emerson

This information is being Research by the DAR Regent Rose Mitcham for future Member Brenda Alston Bradford. This maybe able to help someone else later with their genealogy. I have found the Richards and South line from John Daniel And William South. Amanda is in the book listed at the bottom of the email. We are looking for the parentage of John Green Richards Rose This is the history of James G. Richards the correct name was John Green Richards. Found it in the 1979 History of Washington Co., IL. James Green Richards moved his wife and five children from Florence, South Carolina to Alabama in the late 1850s. Being a Union sympathizer, in 1861 he went north to join the 1st Alabama Calvary leaving his family behind. The family was forced to leave by rebel soldiers, and they joined James in Mississippi. He was sick and died at Corinth. Family was sent to Tennessee with refugees and took a boat from Memphis to Cairo, IL. In 1862 they were loaded into stock cars and sent to Richview, Ill in Washington County. The mother and baby brother soon died and the other four children grew up in the Pleasant Grove and Beaucoup areas. James R. Richards, b. in Florence, South Carolina, in 1856, married Pauline Babb, born in 1857, to Eli S. Babb and Nancy Johnson Babb. James and Pauline lived their entire lives in Washington County, where they raised seven children. P. 409-410 You did inform me of the death of the mother and son as well as where they were buried at the Richview Cemetery, Richview. IL. and the children were given to others in the area of Ashley, Washington County, IL. Be raised and to work for their living. I did find the family that your grandfather James Richards lived with 1880, but know sign of James Richards in the 1870 census. The name of the family was Herman Peithman in Hoyleton, Washington co., IL. This is the same township of where Benjamin Franklin Richards was living. 1880 Census records is that Benjamin F. Richards was living as a laborer with the family of John E. Haun from TN in the township of Hoyleton, Washington Co.,. IL. John D. Richards was living in Nashville, Washington Co., IL Margaret Richards Logan. I have not found the James Richards in Census.
