There are other Wadfords in that county, so maybe William went to live with a family member there after his grandfather died. In 1850, King is living with his parents Nathan (43 SC) and Sarah (42 SC) and siblings in (Henry) AL. I'm not sure any of this helps.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Hubbard-Hammock-Gafford Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RS.2ADE/1234 Message Board Post: I am researching my g-grandfather, William Henry Whadford. He was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He may have ended up at an orphanage or facility and at some point he was claimed and sent to live with a supposed “uncle.” This may have been in Florida. He questioned whether his claimer was a true uncle because he felt used as an indentured servant and this prompted him to run away with alleged “cousins.” He eventually migrated to Texas and the family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Have! ns on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. I found an Alabama census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather may/would have been. I included this information as the Hubbard last name may be some type of clue or tie you may recognize. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name. The listing is: Hubbard, James D., age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie (nickname?), age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. My thoughts are perhaps Ms. Wadford may have been a sister (some type of relative) to James D. or Mollie Hubbard, but she could have been only a boarder. I cannot locate any information on the Hubbards as well. There is also an 1880 census of Butler County, Oaky Streak, Alabama, page 496, listing a William Wadferd. The listing is: Hammock, George, age 49, M, W, Farmer, b. Alabama, cannot write. Sarah, age 49, F, W, Wife, Keeps house, b. Alabama. Elizabeth, age 18, F, W, Daughter, b. Alabama. Wadferd, William, age 24, M, W, Single, Laborer, b. Alabama, cannot write. It appears 1880 William Wadferd is a boarder. As probably flawed as censuses were back then and despite the name spelling and age, this could be my g-grandfather and/or possibly Shelby County Willie Wadford. I also cannot locate any information on the Hammocks either. If you have any information or search suggestions, please contact me at NLCOMPTON@RMCI.NET

I believe this would have been a different Thomas, maybe her uncle, maybe he was a brother to my grandmother's mother Sallie Dykes. The reason for this is the date of his death. My grandmother was born in 1878 and this Thomas would have been a lot older than her. Do you know if Thomas and Zilpha had a daughter maybe named Sarah Caroline? I believe Sallie was a nickname for Sarah and I have also seen my grandmother's mother's name stated as Caroline Dykes. Thanks, Imogene Smith

    3. A good number of the Family Groups reported by this board will be represented tomorrow at the regular 3rd Sunday in July All-Day Singing service at Whitehouse Church. Clayton Howell, b 1912 (son of Lang A.C. & Sarah F. Kennedy Howell and not a grey hair on his head when I last visited him), or his wife, Ivie Loden Howell, will undoubtedly be there. If Clayton is still spry, he can show you where the foundation of the old Forks of the Buttahatcha Primitive Baptist Church (est. abt 1820 by Capt Joseph Burleson & others) was located; if he can't ask Sidney McLean to show you where it was. One of the most beautiful sites in Alabama is the overlook of the Forks of the Buttahatchee confluence, across the Self/Burleson/Howell/Haley pastureland, from the vantage of the Whitehouse cemetery. Wish I could be there; a number of my kin & related families will come in from various cities in AL & other States. My cousin, Sidney McLean (a Whitehead, Carr & Doss descendant) will be giving out free CDs of prior Singing services & recording the service again this year. Songs will be lead by Gary Weatherly, Bernard Burleson, J.D. Logan and many others. Ya'll come. Joel S. Mize Unionists of the Warrior Mountains of Alabama

The boy was Tom, the girls were Ella and Josie and their mother was Bets Dykes. Tom died a young man. When Bets Dykes died the oldest girl, Ella went to live with her (Dessie's) grandmother (Martha Ramsey Lambert). H. G. Lambert (Dessie's father) took care of Josie until she was 13, when then Ella took her to South Alabama (Which I (Imogene) believe was just south to Tuscaloosa Co.) to live. In the 1880 Census Ella was listed in the census with William lambert and Martha Ramsey but her name was changed to Lambert, so her mother must have died before between the birth of Josie in 1878 and 1880. Also, in a Family Group sheet that was from a Lambert Newsletter for William Lambert and Martha Ramsey it states in small print at the bottom that William Lambert also had 3 or 4 other children not listed and their mother was Caroline Dykes. So I am trying to find out what my grandmother's real name was, Caroline, Bets or Sallie. My grandmother was born February 7, 1878. If you could help me with any of this information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Imogene Smith

    3. Wayne --- thanks for the reply; I'd like to note that Nancy Smith Loden & children moved into the LaGrange Co TX area, that was also the settlement area for Capt Joseph Burleson (founder of Forks of the Buttahatchee Primitive Baptist church, adjacent to present Whitehouse Ch of Christ) and others from the Marion County, upper Buttahatchee area who went to TX in the 1830s. Most of the early Burlesons and Lodens were Primitive Baptists. Joel S.
