    1. Re: Benton family from Hamilton, AL
    2. Sharon Tomback
    3. According to Gertie Bell Benton Jones, Guin, Alabama (published in The Heritage of Marion County, Alabama), Thomas R. Benton (b. 1860) married Malinda Emmaline Markham, a daughter of William H. and Hulcey Markham. She wrote that Thomas R. and Malinda Benton had seven children: William, Romer, Lee, Emily, Ollie, Troy, and Resin E. Ms. Jones also related in the book that John Hardemon Benton (b. 1858) married Millissa Markham, a daughter of Rev. Anderson and Mary Markham, and that John and Milissa had nine children: George, Ezra, Willie, Cliff, Wilma, Jessie, Emmet, Mattie, and Curtis. Further, Ms. Jones wrote that William H. Benton (b. 1870) married Melia Abigail Markham, a daughter of Jasper C. and Molly Markham. According to Ms. Jones William H. and Melia Benton had seven children: Jasper, Martin, Barney, Emma, Arrena, Luther and Rufus. The parents of Ms. Gertie Bell Benton Jones were George Anderson and Ella Belle Franks Benton. George Anderson Benton was a son of John H. and Milissa Benton. There are some other details in the article that you will want. If you do not have access to a copy of the wonderful "Heritage" book, I will photocopy the article and mail it to you. Children Matilda, Martha, Frances M (male), George W., Louisa J., Sarah C., John T. (2 years old), and 5 month old Henry. Havent found this family in 1880 yet. Henry seems to be a prisoner in Jefferson County, AL in 1900 census. John T. is in Pemiscot County, Missouri in 1910, said to 42 years old, single born in AL of GA born father.. is hired hand living in household of Isaac Snow. Since the young wife of Wm T. was only 29 in 1870, she may have given birth to Robert in 1774 ; but haven't found them in 1880. Doesn't seem that John T. thought of himself as married, does it?
