I figured that the special healing gift must be in the Palmer line. My great-grandmother, who would have been Russell Porter's niece, was pretty well-known in East Texas as a faith healer. But she would never tell anyone exactly what she did, because she said the power really comes from God, and not from her personally. She also was an expert spinner, dyer, and weaver, as were so many women at that time. Cousin Joyce
----- Original Message ----- From: joyce bynum To: Joel Palmer Sent: Saturday, January 28, 2006 8:46 PM Subject: Palmer stories Joel - I can't thank you enough for those wonderful stories.!!! My great grandmother, Martha Palmer Stegall (born 1832 in Cobb Co., Georgia, died 1927 in Texas) who was your ancestor's first cousin, was a great story teller. (She lost two brothers during the Civil War - one was named Hezekiah Sherwood, after Hezekiah Palmer and Sherwood Camp, the grandparents.) My father told me she would gather the children in the corner of the cabin when it was really dark and the wind was blowing, making spookey noises. And then the story she told went something like this: "Hit was a dark, dark night, and the wind, hit was a-blowin' and the owls was a'screechin', and we was already skeered, when we heerd a sound way off, a-gettin' closer and closer and closer, and then all of a sudden, thar was a clompin' on the front steps, a-gettin' louder and LOUDER, and then the door, hit jest FLEW open, and THAR WAS A YANKEE SOLDIER!" (By this time, the kids were really shivering from fright.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another story of hers that she told on herself, many, many times (I believe my great grandfather suffered from what we call "sleep apnea"): "One night, in the middle of winter, when hit was a-freezin', the ole feller stopped a-breathin', yes, he did! Jest like that! Well, what was I a-gonna do? Hit bein' the middle of the night, freezin' outside, and the nyearest neighbor a mile away. And so I said to m'self and to him, "Well, ole feller, if you is dead, you can jest stay dead 'til mornin'," and I turned over and went back to sleep. Do you know, the next mornin' he warn't dead at all, but as alive as you and me!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's another one of hers that involves the belief that you have to "cuss" your peppers to have a good crop - and of course, she didn't know many "cuss" words: "One day I went out to my gyarden to plant some peppers. And oh, I do love peppers. So after I planted them, I went to the gyarden gate, and I then turned around and pointed my finger straight at the place where I planted the peppers, and I said, "Now, DASH ON YE, GROW!" And do you now, I had the best crop of peppers I ever had. Y'see? Hit's GOOD to cuss the peppers, when you plant 'em." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- She was also a faith healer, and had quite a following among the Primitive Baptists in East Texas. She would go around to the big revivals and camp meetings and heal people. From what they told me, at first she went to these revivals in a horse and buggy, but then her son got a car to drive her, and the old car gave out, and they couldn't afford a new one. And of course, she started to get old. Both she and my grandmother had "second sight" - they predicted the future sometimes, and could almost read people's minds. Have you heard of this among the Palmers in your line? More later, cousin. Joyce Bynum
----- Original Message ----- From: Joel Palmer To: joyce bynum Sent: Sunday, January 29, 2006 3:14 PM Subject: second sight. Joyce, about the "second sight and faith healing"Yes my Palmers were into Faith healing big time. My grandfather "John Palmer", was a Medical doctor and a faith healer too because he was the seventh son and his father also the seventh son made him a faith healer first class. And I understand his father "Russell Porter Palmer" operated the same way. If one way failed they would try the other. And about second sight, my grand father went by feelings a lot he would change his plain if he got a feeling that there was danger in his first plain. He would say boys I changed my mind about doing that we were going to do I got a bad feeling from some one up There. After thinking about it I have done the same thing myself.Joel

I searched the cemetery for about a hour and a half and never did find him. I found a C. Northington and his wife Sallie B. and several of their children. They were buried along with some Bosticks in the same area close to the road that runs on the left side of the cemetery. They were the only Northingtons that I found. I asked the kind folks at the library and they told that I was searching the right cemetery. Now I am at a loss. Could there be another addition to the cemetery? Any help would be appreicated. Thanks, Ken Northington

On a wild hunch, I'm looking for information on Elijah Webb who would have lived west of Winfield within 3 miles of the Fayette County line. Here is the location from land patent documents. S½SW 11/ 12-S 12-W W½NW 14/ 12-S 12-W SENE 15/ 12-S 12-W He acquired this land between 1 Mar 1858 and 1 Sep 1860. It appears that all of the properties are next to each other. Myself and some other Webb researchers have been trying to find the parents of Elisha Webb. He was born about 1823 in AL. He died 2 Jul 1863 in a hospital in Delaware. He married Mary Sharp. She was born 28 Nov 1823 in AL. Her father and brother owned land in Marion County about 5-6 miles from where Elijah Webb was. Thanks, Gene

Greetings! I have a question about your question about "spades" pointing upward carved on a tombstone. Do you mean "spades" as in a card deck or do you mean "spades" as in shovels? If you mean "spades" as in a card deck, could the carving possibly be upside down "hearts"? My understanding of both is that "spades" as in shovels indicates agricultural lifestyle and is usually seen crossed with a scythe, but not upside down. And, my understanding is that an upside down "heart" indicates immortality or broken mortality.
