He was on the 1850 and 1860 census in Marion Co. He enlisted as a pvt. with the Alabama Infantry, 3rd battallian, "sons of 76", and was dead by 1863 as his wife filed a deceased claim on him by 3/7/1863. He had the following children; Thomas W.(W.T.), b. 1852, George W., b. 1858, Margaret M., b. 1859, and John D., b. 1862. Joseph also had a brother named John G. Harper who lived in Lowndes Co., Ms. at this same time period and also died in the war leaving behind 5 children and a wife named Margaret. They were born in NC. I am trying to see if there is a connection between them and one of the Harper's that was located there in Marion Co. at that period in time since they lived in that area and came from the TN/NC area. All of the children for Joseph were born in Alabama, so he was there I feel before the 1850 census which I first locate him on. Any info on this family will be appreciated.
I am searching for an obituary for William Monroe Wiley. He died in the 1930's but I have not been able to find anything on him. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I think that Wesley Williams, son of Stephen Williams, is listed on the 1850 Marion County, AL census, age 32, with Samantha Williams, age 25 and Arminda Williams, age 22. Was Arminda Williams, Wesley's sister or what was the relationship. I can't find Wesley in 1860, but I think the same Wesley Williams is listed on the 1870 Wayne County, TN census with wife Samantha and Sarah Brett, age 27, living in their household. In 1880 Marion County, AL census there is a Wesley Williams with wife Mary listed. I don't know if this is the same Wesley Williams or not. Researchers say that Wesley married Martha Brumley. (Was this a 2nd marriage?) Could Mary be Martha? I found at Ancestry.com where Wesley's widow Martha filed for a pension in re to Wesley's Civil War Service on 31 Aug 1891. Would like to know more about Stephen Williams, Wesley's father. In 1850 did Stephen, age 77, b. SC, and wife Mary, age 65, b. SC, live in the household of their son George W. Williams, Itawamba County, MS? And, is he the same Stephen who is buried at Tremont Methodist Church, Itawamba County, MS? Thanks in advance for any help. Jimmie Nell Meadors

A group of SMITH cousins are doing research on the following line of SMITH descent back to England (JAMES SMITH-b. c. 1800) son of (JESSE SMITH-b.1765) son of (JOHN "LITTLE RIVER" SMITH-b. bet.1730-1740) son of (AMBROSE JOSHUA SMITH-b.1700) son of (CHRISTOPHER SMITH-b.1680) son of (CHRISTOPHER SMITH-b. 1631) We are especially interested in finding proof of relationship between Jesse SMITH and John "Little River" SMITH and would like to find out the names and number of children that John "Little River" SMITH had. We are participating in the SOUTHERN SMITHS DNA PROJECT in hope of finding our correct SMITH lineage. We encourage all that have Southern SMITH roots to visit the website and consider participating in the project. http://www.southernsmiths.org/smithdnaproject.htm We have noticed quite a few people on Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org and other websites are or were researching our SMITH family, but in most instances we cannot contact them because of unknown or invalid email addresses. If you have any knowledge or connection with these SMITHS please consider helping us in this research. We will be more than glad to share information.
Want to confirm that Permelia C. Towry was the daughter of Peter and Jane Scott of Marion County, AL. I thought she married a Tyra, but I believe this may be her on the following census records married to Francis Towry or Towrey. 1880 Marion County, AL Township #9, Range #14, p22b Francis Towry, age 30, b. MS Permelia C., age 26, b. AL Dovey? A., age 4, dau., b. AL NOTE: Listed on p22A, 1880 Marion County census is Jane Scott who I think was Permelia's mother. Other census records that this family is listed on: 1900 Indian Territory, Choctow Nation 1910 LeFlore County, OK 1920 LeFlore County, OK - Permelia was head of household Children listed on these census records were: Marshall Bennie Lee, dau Willie, son Melvin E. NOTE: Other children are listed on the 1900 Indian Territory Census, but their names are blotted out. Would like to hear from anyone researching the Scott family, will share. Thanks in advance for any help. Jimmie Nell Meadors dors1933@vvm.com P. S. Several years ago, I heard from a Scott descendant that George W. C. Scott's son Joseph R. Scott moved from Marion County to this same place in Oklahoma.

John J. Jr. was married twice. I find that naming him, Jr. could have been that he was his father. Although there were occasions in a community where two resided, and they would call them Jr. and Sr. because of age difference. But having the same middle initial leads me to think they were father and son. 2. John J. Dickinson had land patened in Marion County in March 1853 and 1858. 3. John Jr. lived in different places. His probate records (I have them) show that his 2 children by his second wife was in care of W. R. Houston Loden in Hamilton, Marion County AL. I could not find Susan S. again in the census. I found them in 1880 John J. was 65 and she was 24. Her son , John was 2 and Joseph 5/12. Are you saying that Susan S. was the daughter of John L. Nix? 4. In his Commission Claims paper, he stated he had a brother in the CSA and cousins. Andrew J. Huston, my great, great, great grandfather also wrote a letter for John J. The Southern Claim Commission papers were kept if they couldn't prove that they were actually Union Loyalists. If they proved it, all the records have is the amount they were paid. Because both Andrew J. Huston and John J. Dickinson papers were there (and I have both), the government did not believe they were actually Union Loyalist. My ancestor's brother Jasper N. Green (the son of the man Elijah C. Green, who is in the cemetery you mentioned) was a Sgt. in the Union Army. Conclusion: I do not know if John J, Jr's father was John Sr. I am most interested to find out if his first wife was Mary A. Kemp.

My problem with John J. Dickinson Sr. and Elizabeth O'Neal being John J. Dickinson's parents are the following: 1. John J. Dickinon Jr. was born --1813-1816--John J. Dickinson Sr. and Elizabeth O'Neal were married in 1820 in Habersham county Georgia-- 2. The two Johns didn't arrive in Marion county alabama at the same time--John Jr. married Mary A. Kemp in Alabama before 1850--when John Sr. was just arriving. 3. They never lived near one another--never saw them near each other--no familial connection there. No mention of any other Dickinson's in John J. Jr;s Probate records--Guardianship of the 2 little boys was given to Susannah Nix's father--John L. Nix. 4. They were on opposite sides of the war--John Sr--Confederacy--John Jr--Union. Every friend, associate of John Jr. was a Union Loyalist--buried in Logan-Burelson Cemetery--all Union Loyalists--Probate mentions many neighbors--friends--Union Loyalists. All these things could have happened with John Sr. and Elizabeth being the parents of John Jr.--but the more I look into it --the more I wonder. That was my first conclusion--Wrote to Betty Dickinson who wrote the Dickinson Book in the Winfield Library--She sent me many, many research documents--never saw a solid connection between the two men. But I'm open to anything here--just want to know who belongs to who!
