James Hickson Capers was the son of William Hickson Capers and Elizabeth Eleanor Lenoir. He was born in Sumter District, SC about 1816 and moved with his family to Mobile, Alabama after 1825. He and Susan Wingate were married at the house of William Locke in Linden Alabama by the Reverend Abarnathy on the 10th day of April 1839. Angus R. Morrison was the bondsman. They moved to Louisiana and he is listed in West Carroll, Louisiana census of 1840 as follows: 1 son under 5, 2 sons 5-10 years, 2 females 15-20 years old, and 18 slaves. He migrated to Union County Arkansas and is listed in the 1850 census for El Dorado Township in Union County Arkansas as a tavern keeper and landowner: Household 41 on page 227: J.H. Capers 34 m tavern keeper 1, 700 in property born in SC Susan Capers 28 born in NC Susan Wingate Capers 7 f born in AL, attended school Bob Hardy Capers 3 m born in AL There are several other adults with different last names residing in this household. Apparently it was for a hotel or boarding house. Union County is just across the border from Louisiana. In 1860 census for Extra Township, Ashley County Arkansas, James H. Capers is listed on page 155 and in the slave index. In 1861, James was elected Captain, Company B, 3d Arkansas Volunteer Infantry, and saw action in the Virginia area. He was later promoted to Major, and served on the general staff in and around the Richmond, Virginia area. After the end of the Civil War, James Hickson evidently did not return to Susan Wingate and her children. Some family researchers believe he may have started another family and the following data seems to provide evidence of such. Any info about this line would be greatly appreciated.
