Joseph Rogers of the County of Pittsylvania, and state of Virginia, being in perfect health of body, and of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God; calling unto mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament; that is to say, principally, and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hand of Almighty God that give it, and my body I recommend to the earth, to be buried in a decent Christian burial, at the discretion of my executors; nothing doubting but at the general resurrection, I shall receive the same again, by the mighty power of God. And as touching worldly esate where with it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, demise, and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. First, I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my dearly beloved wife; during her natural life, on widowhood, after the payment of all my just debts, all my estate to be enjoyed by her freely. Second, I give and bequeath, to my beloved daughter Polly Cosins five shillings Virginia Currency, to be freely enjoyed by her, and her heirs forever. Thirdly, I give and bequeath to the lawful beings of my beloved daughter Polly Cosins body, one hundred dollars to be raised and levied out of my estate, and to be laid out by my executors in the purchase of a negroe girl, which negroe, I wish to remain in the possession of my said daughter Polly Cosins during her natural life. Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Nelson's lawful heris of her body, twenty-seven Pounds, Virginia Currency, to be raised and levied out of my estate, to be freely enjoyed by them forever. Fifthly, I give and beqeath to my lawful heirs of my beloved son Josiah Rogers, Dec'd all and singular, my lands lying on the east side of my spring branch to be freely enjoyed by them and their beings forever. Sixthly, I give and bequeath to Frances Soyars the land that I have deeded to her husband James Soyers. Seventhly, I give and bequeath to my beloved son William Rogers the land that I deeded to him to be freely enjoyed by him and his heirs forever. Eightly, I give and bequeath to my beloved son Stephen Rogers, one black mare which he has in possession to be freely enjoyed by him forever. Ninthly, I give to my beloved son Reubin Rogers, the ballance of all my lands messuages and tenements by him freely to be enjoyed for every. Tenthly, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Rekeckah Carter, one negroe girl named Velet, her and her increase to be freely enjoyed by her and her heirs forever. Eleventhly, I will and bequeath after the death, or the marriage of my beloved wife, that the ballance of my estate except that heretofore bequeath away, shall be equally divided between, the following legatees, to wit, to the lawful heirs of my daughter, Polly Cusins' body, to be laid out by my executors as before directed; the lawful heirs of my daughter Frances Soyars body, the lawful heirs of my son Josiah Robers, dec'd, my son William Rogers, my son Stephen Rogers, my son Reubin Rogers, and my daughter Rebeckah Carter, to be freely enjoyed by them and their heirs forever. Twelfthly, I do hereby consitute, make, and ordain my beloved son William Rogers, and Jeduthan Carter, Jr., to be sole executors of this last will and testament. And do hereby utterly disallow, revoke, and disavowel all and every other former testament, wills, legacies, bequests, and executors, before me in any wife, before named, willed, and bequeated; ratifying and confirming this, and no other, to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof, I have here unto set my hand and seal this eighth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and eleven.
