I know about the Schrimshers but I can't establish a personal connection with them. I know that old man (name?) Schrimsher was a trader who moved into Indian territory. Deciding that he needed a wife, he "bought" a Cherokee girl, age 15. The girl lived with him, unhappily, for several years. They had several (5) children, but wife refused to adapt to his ways and husband demanded that no Cherokee ways/language be part of his household. She refused to sleep in his bed and eat at his table, and every so often she would return to her people, but come back again until finally one day she just didn't return. This Cherokee girl was Will Rogers' grandmother (maybe greatgrandmother--it's been a while since I read it). I am related to Will, but can't tie it down firmly. I know that my elderly relatives talked about "Uncle Clem and Aunt Mary" who were his parents, but they really don't remember Mary America because she died fairly young. Clem's father was Robert Rogers, with the same name and birthdate, as my gggf. But the locations (Arkansas vs. Okla) were incompatible and there are two different wives, 2 sets of children, etc. I guess that happened sometimes, but Clem was such an upstanding, proper fellow (my folks were too) it seems incredible that could be possible. So I've about decided my relation must come in on the Schrimsher side. My greatgrandmother was Sophronia Davis Rogers (married John Davis). I found a Sophronia Schrimsher in Arkansas, (Greek name) the only other time I found one, so I'm suspicious there is relation there. May I suggest you go to the library and get any and all info on Will Rogers, as you may find something on your Schrimshers. I pulled the record on Mary America Schrimsher at the LDS library in Independence, MO. (No good to me yet.) You can get it too, unless you want to give me a hard address and I can send you a copy. At any rate, I'm very interested in Schrimshers, whether they are relatives or not. I'm going to be in Nashville in a couple of weeks and I'll look there too.
