Nowadays, with so much genealogical material available online and more being added each day, there is always the danger of someone coming along, taking your work and posting/using it without permission. Sadly, such is now the case with the Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society. The current adminstration appears to have seen fit to use some of my online work without my knowledge or consent. I have stated to them that consent was not and is not given. It is for this reason that I am forced to take several steps to fight the issue. A Copyright lawyer has already informed me that there is a clear case of wrongful infringement on my rights. I am in touch with many researchers by Internet and am alerting them to an already growing boycott of the Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society by not submitting materials, subscribing to or purchasing any of their publications, or to query them for any information. The society has already seen a drastic decrease in their membership rolls and in attendance to their workshops. This type of behavior will only make matters worse. With this... new direction?... it appears the line between ethics, legality, proper procedures and etiquette has been crossed when someone is willing to use material whether copyrighted or not to offer as their own. I know many of the society's membership does not support this type of action, this has come from one individual in particular and followers who have, so far, been unwilling or unable to stop the situation. To use a cliche, a word to the wise.... Protect yourself and your work. I am. Spread the word. Richard White ALMADISO-L Listowner
