Hello- I would like to contact anyone on the Madison County list that might know something about the Vandiver and Boley families from Shelby County, Alabama: My great-grandfather was Dr. William Constant VANDIVER, born 1856, son of James L. and Martha Ann Vandiver. He married Clara Iola BOLEY (born 1857) sometime before 1879. They lived in Vandiver, Alabama. Dr. Vandiver went to Mena, Arkansas sometime after 1891. Clara's children were: Lula A. Vandiver (b. 1879, married Edmond Salser). Ida Vandiver (married J. E. O'barr, 15 September 1897). Leila Iola Vandiver (b. 13 Jan. 1889, d. 11 Nov. 1971, married Arthur Lamar Williams). James Clyde Vandiver (b. 16 June 1891, d. 14 November 1940, married Nancy Frances Johnson). James Clyde was my grandfather. I would like to make contact with relatives of William Vandiver and Clara Boley, or anyone that might know some family history. I am also interested in the history of the Vandiver area. Thank you, James C. Vandiver
Looking for information on the Edward Henry family from early Madison Co records. Edward Henry married Delilah Carter on Feb 28th 1848 in Madison Co according to the 1850 census, Edward and Delilah are still in Madison Co with a daughter named mary and a James Carter, age 14, in the household. In the 1860 census Delilah is now living alone, probably a widow. The census was taken at Hayes Store possibly in the New Market area. Other children include Harriet, Martha, Sallie and Benjamin. Delilah is still living in 1870 in Madison Co but she is not listed in the 1880 census so she may have died or remarried. Any information on this famlily deeply appreciated. Thanks. Hi, For many years we have been searching for ancestors of William Henry RAY. According to oral family history, he was born in Huntsville, AL ca. 1820 where his father died when he (William) was young; she re-married. Shortly thereafter, she died, and her widower (William's step-father) remarried. Thus, William had a step-father and a step-mother. According to the story; the step-father beat William, and after one such beating when William was very young, he ran away to MS. In MS he married, fathered one child, and died around 1845. We have no information concerning his parents and do not know whether he had any siblings. If anyone has any information on this family, we would be very happy to receive it. Thank you, Helen McClendon

!!!BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT!!! DEATH AND MARRIAGE NOTICES FROM JEFFERSON COUNTY, ALABAMA NEWSPAPERS, Volume I (1854-1881) Compiled by Larry E. Caver, Jr. This is to inform you about the release of my latest book, Death And Marriage Notices From Jefferson County, Alabama Newspapers, Vol. I (1854-1881). This is the first volume in a continuing series of newspaper transcriptions related to Jefferson County, Alabama. The collection contains newspaper transcriptions from surviving issues of newspapers that once operated in Jefferson County between the years 1854-1881. The book has approximately 354 pages, soft binding and includes a detailed index. It contains newspaper transcriptions from surviving issues of: The Jones Valley Times (1854-1855), The Elyton Herald (1869), The Daily News (1874), The Birmingham Observer (1880-1881), The Alabama True Issue (1880), The Birmingham Iron Age (1874-1881), and The Weekly Independent (1879). This collection is of special interest for anyone doing research in the Greater Birmingham, Alabama area. The earliest newspapers of Jefferson County were published at the town of Elyton, and recorded many death and marriage notices for some of the earliest settlers of Jefferson County and neighboring counties. Later newspapers were published in the newly formed city of Birmingham. These newspapers recorded valuable information on the city's early settlers. Many of these settlers had migrated from diverse parts of the entire state to become residents of Alabama's "Melting Pot". Birmingham's early newspapers also included many news items copied from other newspapers in the surrounding counties of St. Clair, Shelby, Bibb, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Blount. They also included news items copied from newspapers in counties in North Alabama such as Madison, Lauderdale, Pickens, Cullman, DeKalb and Jackson. This collection is also a value tool for anyone researching Alabama. The Birmingham Iron Age included weekly columns, "Died In Alabama", "Married In Alabama", and "State News", which provided many death and marriage notices from all over the state. These columns included coverage extending north to Huntsville and as far south as Mobile. The official release date for this book is November 1, 2002. The book has been published and copies will be available for purchase on or after this date. The book has been published by Pioneer Publishing Company. It is available for $35 per copy plus $4 postage/handling. If you would like to order a copy of this forthcoming book, you can use the form below.
