Marta: The following is taken from a book written by Judge Thomas Jones Taylor (1819-1894), A HISTORY OF MADISON COUNTY AND INCIDENTALLY OF NORTH ALABAMA 1732-1840. The Cherokees ceded all their territory north of the Tennessee River in this State(Ala), to the United States, and in 1819 it was formed into Jackson County, having its boundary on the old Madison line to Flint River, which was the line between the two counties down to the Tennessee. In the year 1821 Decatur County was created out of part of Jackson County. This county was very irregular in form, extending from the Tennessee line to the Tennessee river, over forty miles in length and with a breadth of about five miles on the State line, being in some places not more than three miles wide and at its greatest extent not more than twenty-five miles. The county site was at Woodville, but as soon as the State was able to calculate the area of this many-sided county it was ascretained that it did not have the constitutional area in square miles, and it was abolished by the Legislature of 1823-4 and the present line between Madison and Jackson established. This line was to begin where the Indian reservation or the twelve mile square line intersects Paint Rock river, thence it run northwest with the reservation line to the range line on east side of range two east, which it followed to the main ridge between the waters of Flint and Paint Rock, and then followed the dividing ridge between these streams to the dividing line. I hope the above will help you. Bob
Re: County of Decatur Creation and Abolishment In December 1821, Decatur County Alabama was created out of part of Jackson County and the part of Madison County located east of the Flint River. This county only lasted in creation from December 1821 until December 1825. Can anyone offer any discussion on why this county was created and only lasted for four years? Was this actually a new county created from a part of Indian Territory at that time or had Jackson and Madison Counties already expanded to include that area. Which county was created first Decatur county, Jackson County or Madison County?

Hi List Cousins, Does anyone know the children of Abraham KING on the 1809 Tax List?? Did he have a son named Elijah KING?? Kathy
My ancestor, Peter Ragsdale (1798-1860) mustered in to Col. Higgins / Capt. Etheridge's Company in Madison Co., Mississippi Territory (later Alabama) in 1813 and mustered out 3 months later on 1814. Does anyone know of this company and where it was know where this company was formed and the area most of those joining were from. If not, do you know of any resources that described that info? I'm trying to see if this information can give me a clue where Peter Ragsdale was living when he mustered in at the ripe age of 15 when he "substituted for his father" (name NOT given) as detailed in his 1851 Bounty Land Warrant application. Does anyone know if their might be enlistment records from 1813-14 showing who Peter substituted for? Thanks, Kelley Ragsdale [email protected] RAGSDALE/PETTYPOOL/POOLE/CALLIS/WILLIAMSON/MORAN/COFFEE/SMITH/BUTLER/MCDONALD

The following is what I have: 1. Based on some researchers, of the this line Andrew Jackson Sharp b. 1836-39 d. 1916 Chotaw, Okla. He suppose to have been the son of William and Jane Sharp of Madison County, Al. He married a Missouri Clementine Sharp b. abt 1837-39 Madison County d. in Okla. The researchers have these to have had approx 13 children and they were: 1. David Eli Sharp b. 8 Jan 1860 2. Martha A. Sharp b. 1861 3. William Sharp b. 1863 4. Margaret Sharp b. 1865 5. Mary Mollie Sharp b. 1867 6. Jake Sharp b. 1869 7. Russell Kelly Sharp 8. John Sharp b. 1872 9. Lee Roy California Sharp b. 3 Feb 1874 10. Katherine Sharp b. 1876 11. Caledonia Callie Sharp b. 1878 12. Lorenzo "Lowe" Snow Sharp b. 1889 ?? . In addition there is Humphries that is the descendent of Lorenzo. Have lost her address. She lived in Okla. 13. Willis Cody Sharp b. 1882 Also, there is a pension application for a Andrew Jackson Sharp living in Gurley, Ala. He filed for a pension, but was turned down, because of inaccurate info. Then in 1907 the application board wanted him file additional info, but he never did. It is my understanding the brothers and sisters moved to Texas and Oklahoma and Andrew and Missouri moved later. No other info about that. Also, base on 1850 Census for Madison County, Al Dist 34 William and Jane Sharp have a son by the name of Jackson Washington Sharp b. abt 1839. Based, on the marriage certifcate Jackson W. Sharp married a Missouri Clementine Duskins/Deskins 9 March 1859 and they had a son by the name of David Eli b. 8 Jan 1860. Have not research this any further. Have not looked at the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census. If anyone can help to solve the above problem would appreciate any help. It has become a maze. Thanks for any help. Bob --part0_907805953_boundary--

COWAN, JOHN EDWARD "EDD" thought to be born in Hollywood, Jackson, AL abt 1894-6. He would be the son of Alice Virginia "Allie" Baker and ______. Allie was the daughter of John W. and AnnaEliza Thomas Baker who moved from Hollywood to Milam Co., Tx abt 1894. Who and what happened to the father of this child? Was there a legal father? In 1955 my grandmother filed a statement with a Texas County Clerk that Edd Cowan was born Jan 1 1894, and was taken into his grandmother home, because of the death of his mother in 1900. He was called Edd Baker but no court action was taken. This would correspond with the census and explain why the grandmother suddenly had one more child in 1900. I can find no information on Edd, I assume because of the Cowan/Baker name exchange. Can someone tell me anything? Sandy Walker [email protected]
