Hi Rosa, I believe you have found the records for my gg gf and g gf. I have a copy of those records and relatives still in the Madison County area know exactly where the land is located. I hope to visit Al in the next few months to meet relatives and see the "old stomping grounds". Thank you for your effort in providing the land discriptions. I got thde info from a whole series of publications by Pauline Jones Gandrud. She was born about 1904 and spent a number of years compilien Madison County records. Most of my info came from Vol 149 entitled "H" surnames -deeds-Deaths-Certificates-Land Patents-Bible records-Tombstones.
Hi Dawn, I'm not sure that I can help you but here goes. I have focused on a stright line back so have not chked on siblings that were not in that direct line. *William Hughes b about 1829 (was 31 in 1860 censis) in Al or Va. Martha Caroline Posey b about 1829 (was 31 in 1860 censis) in Al marriage date Aug. 21, 1850 in Madison County, AL. All of William Hirams decendent from the second marriage are located. The only child from the first marriage that is rather obscure as to what he did with his life is B. Hutto. I included all this because siglings in the early 1800's have not been traced (at least by me) Bill Hughes
Hi again David, I was reviewing some info that I found yesterday in the Ft. Worth Library on Madison county. These are land patents. Book K, page 71. 6 Dec. 1825. REBECCA HUGHES, to WILLIAM HUGHES and wife MARY *(one WM. HUGHES married MARY WALKER 7 May, 1823, Madison County vol 151 p. 15)* THOMAS THORN and wife SALLY and THOMAS HUGHES to SPENCER W. ELKIN, all their interest in 112 acres, part of NE1/4 Sec 1 T3 R2 W being the land "the inherit" from THOMAS HUGHES. ..... THOMAS HUGHES dec'd 6 Dec,1825 It says that Thomas Hughes widow was named Nancy Book M, page 141. 21 Jan. 1829. William H Hughes to Spencer Elcan, mortage on part of NE 1/4 sec 1 T3 R2W being the tract sold me by the said Elcan and Martha P. his wife on Jan 21, 1829. Book N, page 204. 25 Oct, 1830 William H Hughes and wife Mary to Gabriel Moore, part of NE 1/4 sec 1 T3 R2W it being all of said quarter section not previously sold by the heirs of RALEIGH HUGHES to said Gabriel Moore, 112 acres. Witnesses James Lanford, Henry Lanford. When I looked at the 1830 censis some time back I didn't see a William H. Hughes listed. I don't know if he was missed or what. It appears that this William H. Hughes could be a son? of Raleigh Hughes. He could be the gf of William Hiram Hughes b1851. William Hiram's father was born about 1829. David, If you have any data that would document these connections, I would appreciate hearing from you. I have seen Raleigh Hughes referred to several times on the Hughes Roots-L net. Apparently, Raleigh Hughes has been researched. connecting William Hiram of 1851 to William Hughes (this is done) to William H. Hughes to Raleigh Hughes may open up a lot of data. Thank you Bill Hughes

Can someone possibly help with a marriage look-up for Lewis Kull? According to the ages of his children, the date could range from 1890-1915. Jennifer S. Braswell
I am hoping that one of your readers may be able to help me discover some of my missing BURDYNE/BURDINE in Alabama. REGINALD BURDYNE with wife DORTHEA TANNER BURDYNE and a brother SAMUEL BURDYNE with wife SUSANNAH TARRENT BURDYNE and their sister BARBARA BURDYNE GRESHAM were found in South Carolina. In 1803 the children of Reginald and Dorothy along with Samuel and his family and Barbara and her family went to Georgia. REGINALD'S children: JEREMIAH, JOHN, RICHARD, who married SARAH WALLING 1820, REUBEN, NANCY (BROWN) and WILLIAM. After a few years some of Reginalds children and possibly Samuel Burdine or at least a couple of his children went into Alabama. I have found a JAMES TARRANT BURDINE, b. 1799, in Alabama and his sister CATHERINE b. 1798 and she married WILLIAM RICHARDS. The year that Samuel left Alabama for Mississippi is unknown or why, if James and Catherine were his children, they did not go with him. I am not positive that James and Catherine are the children of Samuel and Susannah. I find no record of him with the family information in Mississippi. Samuel and Susannah were married 8Sep1796. There was also a HENRY BURDINE and his children IRENA C. and JOHN M. BURDINE, relationship to any of the above is unknown. RICHARD BURDYNE was granted land in Madison County, Alabama Grant #799, 2FEB1818 near Morgan County border in Township 5 South Range 1 East, Section 13 and Section 24 for a total of 190 acres. He married SARAH WALLING 28FEB1820. RICHARD died 13FEB1826. He left his estate to his only child JOHN GEORGE J. BURDINE and guardianship of him to REUBEN SHOTWELL (whether his sister HANNAH BURDYNE SHOTWELL had made this migration is not known). John George died in 1834 and Richards estate was in probate again because of provisions he made if the child should die. Probate Record #3, page 362, Madison County, Alabama. At the Orphans Court 14MAR1835, Book 6, page 198 a petition with several of the Burdines listed. They were: SETH Q. WADDELL and wife MARY(BURDYNE), REUBEN BURDINE, CLARK BURDINE, THOMAS B. DANFORTH and his wife SOPHIA (BURDINE), JULIA NOEL (BURDINE), GEORGE BURDINE, ELIZABETH BURDINE, THOMAS BRUGGS and his wife MARY (BURDINE), HENRY CURRY and his wife LUCINDA (BURDINE), BENJAMINE ALIEN and his wife FRANCES (BURDINE), PETER McRADY and his wife NANCY (BURDINE), WILLIAM WADSWORTH and his wife SARAH (BURDINE), HENRY BURDINE deceased and his children IRENA C. and JOHN M. BURDINE and their guardian RICHARD B. PURDOM. My search brings me to these Burdines and their families of whom I wish to discover more information on them and their connection to Richard Burdine. Thank you for your help. Carol Ann

I have combed the portions of the 1850 Alabama Madison Co. Census which have been transcribed and are on the Alabama GenWeb Archives. Could not locate my great-grandfather (for sure) although I located the rest of his family. My question is this: Does anyone have access to a fascimile version by which you could analyze the actual handwriting? If so, would you be willing to look at the following household for me? 1850 / Madison Co., AL District #33 Reel No. M432-9 PAGE NO. 367B. household/family 48/48 Oley, W.M. Oley, Octavia Oley, Mary Neaval, Milar It's the last name I'm interested in. I wonder if MILAR NEAVAL (as is indicated in the typed transcription) could possibly be MILAS NEAVES (when one looks at the actual census)??? The age is right for my great-grandfather and the census would have been taken about a month before he was to marry...so it stands to reason that he might have been working for another family as a farm laborer. If anyone has access to this information and would be willing to look and give me your assessment, I would be most appreciative. Teresa Neaves
In a message dated 1/2/99 3:48:27 AM Central Standard Time, ALMADISO-D- [email protected] writes: << What sources would be the best for me to be able to find out about his residence, and property, please? >> According to Marilyn Davis Barefield's Old Huntsville Land Office Records & Military Warrents, p. 57, Sterling Smith filed at Huntsville 9 Dec 1834, on section 7, township 1, range 5 west, listing Limestone County (next door) as his home. You might find further information in the similar published records for Nashville, Tuskaloosa, and Cahaba land offices. Remember, these are original grants only (I think), so he could have bought widely from earlier investors without appearing here. There are also a couple of George Smith's in the area, but none listas George Sterling or George S. Smith. Barefield has a similar book for the other Alabnama land offices I mentioned, and I'm sure it won't be hard to get those for the Nashville land sales. Al Hill
