Dear Genealogical Enthusiast, The University of Alabamas Cartographic Research Laboratory is creating an atlas of Alabama cemeteries. The atlas, entitled the Historical Atlas of Alabama, Volume II: Cemetery Locations by County, is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 1999. We would like to know if you would be interested in reviewing the information we have collected thus far for your Alabama county or counties of interest. Obviously local experts on cemeteries are of great importance to the creation of a complete and accurate book. Please email us at [email protected] with your postal mailing address as well as the names of the counties if you would like to review our research. We would be happy to send you the information. Please know that this information comes at no obligation, we are simply interested in confirming the completeness and accuracy of our data. To find out more about us, please feel free to visit our new web site at: http://www.as.ua.edu/geography/cart_lab/ Thank you for your consideration, Craig Remington Director, Cartographic Research Lab Department of Geography, University of Alabama
The Fanning Cemetery in King's Cove is in Jackson County Al, in over the border from franklin County Tn in an area called Francisco. It is located very far off the road but you should know that the cemetery was destroyed many years ago by logging crews, as I have been told. The Fanning's of this area were William Fanning and Jane Terry and his brother James Fanning and wife Mary. There were several generations of these two men who lived in both Jackson and Madison Counties of Ala. I checked my data base to see if I had a record of a James H Fanning to Emily Kirk and found none. There are quite a few James Fanning's. Do you have a birth date for James? Hello All, Emma Lee Lucinda "Rocki" Moon married Charles Walker Kelly in Madison Co Al. I was told that she was a Cobb and was adopted. I have found no other marriages for her. Rocki was born in Madison Co Al, she died in Huntsville July 24, 1926 at the age of 57 yrs and was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery. Today I rec'd a copy of her death certificate and it gives her parents as Berry or Benny Hasking and Lue Harden both b in NC. It also states that Rocki was b in Madison Co Al. Does anyone know of this Hasking couple? Charlie and Rocki lived in the Owens Cross Rds area in Madison County before moving to Huntsville, there they lived in the Merrimac Mill Village and Charlie is buried in the cemetery there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Kathy mailto:[email protected]

Hi Stephanie, I see that you are researching the surname Brown. My grate grandfather was John Andrew Brown who I suspect may have lived in Madison County, Alabana in the late 1800's. He was married to Margaret Kathleen Mooney. The last known place of residence was Kelso Tennessee when my grandmother, Rena May Brown, was born October 23, 1881. They had the following children: Elizabeth, Ella, Willie (female), Mattie, Almey (male), John and Rena May. I believe they may have lived in Madison County before my grandmother was born. My grandmother who married Barny Lyman Hoover, lived just north of Hazel Green, in Madison County. Wondered if these Brown's might connect with yours. This is all the information I have on the Brown's or the Mooney's. Anything would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Dottie Rogers Stephenson San Antonio, TX

Does your historians have a listing of the African-American funeral homes that operated in the Madison County area between 1890 and 1940? Family oral history has suggested that an ancestor may have been in the business during that time frame. I am especially interested in a funeral home operated by the "Harris" family. It is possible however, they may have operated under some other business name. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks
