    1. Re: Need help please - Macon Co.
    2. Victor - If you happen to find someone actually living IN Macon Co. who is also doing research there, I would sure love to know about it. I grew up in Macon Co. (Tuskegee)--living in Washington, D.C. now--and, as an adult, I have made several trips "home" to do family research there. All too often, my visits there were not long enough to gather all that I needed. Several trips to the court house (Office of Probate) proved to be somewhat helpful, but some of the records I need to research--land records, for instance--are located in another office, not Probate. Visiting the Probate Office takes a fair amount of time and patience; their records are not the worst I have seen, but they are not the best either, and it can take a while to find a single record. Like most small county courthouses, there is only a staff of two, women who are friendly, but without much time to be all that helpful; so you are pretty much on your own when you go there. Tuskegee does not have an archivist, historical or genealogical society. The closest formal archivist is in Auburn (Lee Co.) I believe. There is also an archivist at Tuskegee University, but I believe the focus of his research is more of a general nature... the historical, cultural, socio-economic, educational and history development of the county and African American people there; slavery, and especially of the school's history and development are part of the school's holdings (at Hollis Burke library). There was a woman in Tuskegee, an avid genealogist, who died not too long ago. Her name was Mrs. Segrest. The Segrest name goes waaaay back in Macon Co. history; and, there are Segrest descendants living in Tuskegee today. During a trip to Tuskegee not too long ago, I spoke with her son (in his 40's and not at all into genealogy), who thought that most of his mother's historical/genealogical material and records had been donated to the genealogical society in Auburn (see USGenWeb > Alabama > Lee County ). You might try there to find a record of persons buried at Tuskegee cemetary, for instance. (I have tried to find cemetary records for Macon Co., but there does not seem to be any central repository for these records; the "keepers" of the different cemetaries seem to hold the historical records.... so you have to first identifiy the cemetary's caretaker.) Anyway, I thought I would share my experience. Maybe you'll get some clues that will prove to be useful. ...and, again, I ask that you share any sources or the name of any individual that may offer assistance with Macon Co. research. Annette Researching... mother's surnames: HARPER GREENE SPEED TARVER LENNARD/LEONARD LANE father's surnames: KROUSE BESTED(A/ER) AUSTIN PATRICK ... mostly in AL counties.
