I am asking for clarification of this issue. If slaves were property and property taxes were paid yearly, are slaves listed on these records and the $ amount paid for them? Estate Records and even wills may be the only source (at least for Macon and Pike counties of Alabama) where slaves were listed. Were there year to year records before slave owners died where their slaves were documented. I also have been told when slaves were purchased from another state, they had to be recorded in the state of the slave owner. Are there such records for Macon and Pike Counties. I have contacted the Ala Archives for info in Montgomery and have been told such documents are only found at the county level. Could someone clarify this for me. thanks delbra
