In my memory, the three in-town cemeteries in Tuskegee. They are: 1) Tuskegee City Cemetery, on Lane Street, where whites are buried, a record of which is in the possession of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, in Montgomery. 2) Ashdale Cemetery, on Lane Street, where African Americans are buried (across from the "white" cemetery); and 3) Greenwood Cemetery, on Old Montgomery Road. This cemetery is traditionally thought of as the cemetery for the Tuskegee Institute/University community, but it is by no means exclusive to University families. A smaller cemetery exists of the gournds of Tuskegee University. This is where BTW is buried, along with other TU presidents, faculty and some of their family members. Just outside of the Tuskegee city limits are several smaller, church buriel grounds, as someone has already mentioned, including Ft. Hull and Chehaw, where African Americans are also buried. To my knowledge, none of the African-Americans buriel places in Tuskegee have been fully inventoried and documented, although a few years ago, local LDS people went through the two most prominent ones (Ashdale and Greenwood) and made a compilation, which I actually saw (in the possession of Burton's Funeral Home), but I have not been able to find a reprint and don't know who to contact for this material. I wish I knew... It might help if you to identify all of the possible buriel locations throughout Macon Co. if you would request a county map from the City of Tuskegee's land/real estate office. These maps denote all of the buriel places in the county that are identifiable, preserved, and/or still in use. Hope this helps.
