I want you all to know that I did not write these. Tim Stowell, the former USGenWeb Coordinator and currently a very active State Coordinator for Georgia among others is the author of these tips! He has given us permission to forward them to our mailing lists. Don't know how often he will write them, but what he writes is of great use to all of us! I wrote Tim the note below from all of us: To: "Tim Stowell" <tstowell@chattanooga.net> Tim Thank you! What a nice service this is for the web's genealogists, newbies and old alike! I have set my mailbox up so that when something from you (Tim Stowell) and with the words (PC Tips) in the subject line (both must be present) automatically forwards to several of the mailing lists that I maintain. Looking forward to your next installment! Laura

I am researching these members of my mother's maternal line who made it from Caswell (and Rockingham) county in North Carolina to Tuskegee. Alexis Howard, my great-great-great-great grandfather, brought his 3rd wife Mary Graves over and their children. With them came his son and wife, my great-great-great grandparents, Dr. Henry Allen Howard and wife Elizabeth Graves Settle. Elizabeth was Mary Graves' niece; her mother being Frances Graves, an older sister of Mary. Both Frances and Mary were children of General Azariah Graves and wife Elizabeth Williams. Dr. Henry and Elizabeth Howard had 8 children; seven of whom survived to adulthood. Their son Josiah Alexis HOWARD married Mary (Mollie) HARWELL in Montgomery, Alabama in 1880. Mollie was a daughter of wealthy merchant and slave trader Mason HARWELL and wife Sarah SEAGER HARWELL. Mason and Sarah had 10 children. Mollie was their next-to-the youngest. Mason (born in 1806) died in 1879. Sarah Seager Harwell passed away September 1, 1880, a month prior to Mollie and Josiah's marriage. Pat Hansen

Searching for family of Eleanor G. WILLIAMS who married James M. ALLEN in November, 1867, in Macon County, AL. On the 1870 census James is a medical doctor and they have 3 children, one of whom is 5 or 6 years old. This leads me to believe that Eleanor was married prior to her marriage to James. However, James was previously married to Caroline O. BURFORD in Macon County. I have located a E. G. SUMMERFORD (sic) marrying a Thomas J. WILLIAMS in Butler County, AL, but so far cannot determine whether this may have been Eleanor G. WILLIAMS. She is my g-g-grandmother, her daughter Zulia m. James Norman MASON although I have no record (yet) and had my grandfather, Norman Phelps MASON in Birmingham, AL, in 1893. Any help with this Eleanor G. WILLIAMS/Summerford?? would be appreciated. Seeking info about George and David WHATLEY who are buried in Little Texas Cemetery. George died 21 Nov 1933 David died 19 Oct 1926 thanks harry chevienomad@yahoo.com
I am interested in this family but have basically census info on them. I have been to the Macon County Courthouse in Tuskegee and did not find info on the relationship I am seeking. In your note you listed the children. Is there 1 son named William Jesse or 2 sons named William & Jesse? I would appreciate any additional info you might provide me on the ancestors or potential for ancestors of Enos Washington LEE. I am trying to find the parents of William L. LEE, 12 Feb 1851. He was an orphan in 1868, below and David ELKINS lived right on the Lee Co/Macon, Co line. He was adopted by David ELKINS the day before William L. LEE married his daughter, Winnie ELKINS, and David was able to sign for his marriage to his daughter. pg. 60, William LEE Minor Appointment of Guardian of his Person pg 61 Probate Court December 9th 1868 This day came David ELKINS and filed his application in writing and under oath asking to be appointed Guardian of the person of William LEE a minor over the age of fourteen and the said William LEE appeared in open court and made choice of the said ELKINS as his guardian. it is therefore ordered that letters of Guardianship do issue forthwith to the said ELKINS over the person of the Wm LEE. 10 Dec 1868 William LEE married Winnie ELKINS, Lee Co, AL by W. M. Capps Bk. 1 p. 187. On the day following David Elkin's being appointed the Guardianship of William LEE, William LEE married Winnie ELKIN's, David ELKINS daughter. I assume William had to have a Guardian to sign for him. William was born 12 Feb 1849-1851. Some later Census records have William as born in Georgia, some in Alabama. --------------------------------------------------------------------- <<I am researching my gr gr grandparents Enos Washington Lee and Louisa Moseley Lee, moved to Macon Co 1848 and lived there through 1870 . Their children are Matthew , Stephen Alexander Mary Elizabeth Nancy Enos Washington Lee Jr Sarah F William Jesse Robert E Lee , Seeking information on this family and I will share what I have , Thanks JHAMMET@AOL.COM>> David Pope 2407 Hodges Bend Circle Sugar Land, TX 77479 (H) 281/980-8893 (C) 713/412-1903 tabsgran2@aol.com

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stevens/Sparks Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QS.2ADE/874.1.1 Message Board Post: Thank you Steve, based on what you told me, I decided to go back to Ancestry and try searching the census based on an Index I found on the Macon County page. I found Milton on page 265B. Did not find the Sparks children living with him as I had hoped. So that search will go on. The Sparks children I am looking for are the orphan of Giles Sparks, James O. Andrew Sparks and Richard W. Sparks, in 1861 Milton Stevens filed some papers in probate court. Giles is the brother of one of our ancestors and Milton is a brother of another. Will keep looking and someday will find the piece of the puzzle. Judy
does anyone know how to find the names of the elected representatives of Macon Co., ca 1850? thanx, JW
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Jackson, Kincaid, Culver, Wingard, Thornton, Grier, Smith, Gray Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QS.2ADE/874.1 Message Board Post: Page 935 refers to some larger page numbering scheme, since there are only 275 images for all of Macon County in 1850 (not including slave schedules). There's an index and partial transcription online at <http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/macon/census/1850/>, but the transcription doesn't extend to the page where the only Stevens entry in the index appears. I tried looking in a few spots near where that page number suggests (it's using the stamped pages numbers placed when the census pages were microfilmed), but found nothing. I don't have time to go through all 275 images individually and visually search. But if you can provide some further information that might help narrow it down, I'll see if I can get the image for you. = Steve =
I have been searching for the family of my grandmother Sallie BIGGERS LARKINS from Union Springs for several years without any new leads. Her death certificate list 1868 as her birth year in Bullock County, and the 1900 Troy Alabama census list her birth date as September 1866. My understanding is that Union Springs was in Bullock County prior to the formation of Macon County, and now it is in Macon County. I have a long trail on Sallie from 1892 on, that was the year that she married my grandfather Jack LARKINS in Troy. My search now is to find Sallie's family, and I am asking for any assistance that anyone on this list can offer. Her death certificate (she died in December of 1944) gives her parents names, but both are mostly unreadable. Her father's name looks like Sam or Sean BIGGERS. Her mothers first name is clearly Clara, Sallie later named one of her children Clara, but I can not make out the last name. It is something like Sucity, but that is only a guess and I doubt if it is correct. If anyone has any info on BIGGERS from Union Springs I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!!! Charles Larkins, Jr. Researching: LARKIN/S, BIGGERS, WYLIE, NEDAB, COWART, BYRD, APPLIN, GREEN, MITCHELL. All from Alabama, Pike, Coffee, Macon & Bullock County. LARKIN/S, STINSON, EDWARDS from Elba in Coffee County Alabama. GILYARD from Nassau County Florida. TAYLOR from Norristown in Montgomery County PA
Hi List, I ordered some microfilms of the "Tuskegee Republican" from the Alabama Archives through interlibrary loan. I have 2 films; one is dated November 8, 1849 through December 30, 1852. The next one is dated Feb.3, 1853 through October 9, 1856. I have them here at my local library until February 11th. I am willing to look up anything any of you would like within these dates provided you can give me a specific date. There are lots of legal ads...probate, estate, chancery, etc. Also some marriage and death announcements. Some of the pages are nearly unreadable, but I am happy to try. If any of you had ancestors who were merchants, lawyers, doctors, or anyone else who would place an ad in the paper, there are a lot of advertisements, and I can look for them. Polly
