There was a Littleberry Lee and Lucy Cook that married in Virginia in 1792 which is a posibility. Also a Samual Lee that I want to look at closer. As far as Joshua I don't know anything about him. I have just been searching for the Lee family for about 10 years or so off and on. Do you live in Texas? I live in Alvin, Texas. My e-mail is hocott@mail.ev1.net if you want to contact me. Dorothy

    1. Re: [ALMacon] Tuskegee Experiment
    2. Delilah, you are right that the VA hospital in Tuskegee still exists, though there have been some changes. A few years ago when the VA was closing hospitals, some duplicate facilities at the Montgomery and Tuskegee VA Hospitals were merged. They are now referred to as the Central Alabama Veterans' Health Care System - East Campus (Tuskegee) and West Campus (Montgomery). They are about 40 miles apart. If I understand correctly from relatives down there who are veterans, instead of getting a full menu of services at both places, you may have to go to Tuskegee if you need, say, geriatric services, and Montgomery for orthopedics, but between the two campuses, it's still a full-service medical facility. So far as I know, John Andrew Community Hospital in Tuskegee is still serving the non-veteran community. I think they may have reduced some services a few years ago, too, though. I'm from Tallassee, about 15 miles from Tuskegee, and last time somebody in my family was hospitalized at Community Hospital in Tallassee, I spent a lot of time in the ICU waiting room chatting with folks who were from Tuskegee. Can't remember the details of what they said about it, but I have the impression that John Andrew is no longer a comprehensive hospital as it used to be, thus more people from Tuskegee are coming to Tallassee. However, any records that were at John Andrew should still be there. Suzanne

    3. Thanks for your input, I was not sure how to answer the subject, I know there was book written about The Final Report of the "Tuskegee Syphillis Study", should be in any major library - I had got some informaiton on it from Keith Norman, Executive Director of the Alabama State Bar. You may be able to get some info from the Bar site, as a series of articles on Civil Rights were written by Fred Gray and are on the site. Was not the VA Hospital and John Andrew Hospital together in the beginning, then John Andrew Hospital became seperate and was a hospital for the public, although the VA still stood, I do believe it is still in service, at least not long ago - not sure but I think there were doctors 'hired' by the gov. to take the patients and they were not all located in Tuskegee. According to Mr. Gray in his series, "Then one day I woke up in 1972 and learned that in my own county of Macon, the federal government had financed a 40 year program in which it had used 623 African-American men, sone of whom had syphilis and some of whom did not, to study the course and effects of untreated syphillis-without the knowledge or consent of the men involved." In addition to getting a fair settlement (for those days), the survivors eventually received an apology from President Clinton in 1997. He also announced the formation of the Tuskegee Human and Civl Rights Multicultural Center - I think this is at what was once the Holiday Inn off I-85. delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: <AMcLane101@aol.com> To: <ALMACON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 05, 2004 12:13 AM Subject: Re: [ALMacon] Tuskegee Experiment > > In a message dated 3/5/04 3:50:02 AM, Page007655@cs.com writes: > > << I would love to come to Tuskegee and photograph the old hospital, town , > and anything else that pertains to the story of the Syphyllis experiment. I have a copy of the sale which gives the land description. It is recorded at the courthouse in Tuskegee. Since I haven't found a Land Patent for this property in the Bureau of Land Management database, I am thinking my ancestors may have inherited it, but if they did, I have not yet located a Will. I don't know who their parents or siblings were. I would like to know when and how my ancestors gained ownership of this land, so if anyone would offer suggestions on where I need to search to find this information, I would appreciate it very much. Since you have a the land description, use that to search the BLM database. Do not search by the owner's name. Also, be aware that the database lists the land by what county it is NOW in. So although it was Macon Co. in 1845, it may be in a different county now. That should tell you who the original purchaser of the land was. Good luck.

    2. Alabama did not start keeping birth records until after 1910; there might be a baptismal record somewhere if she belonged to a church which baptized children as infants, i.e., Episcopal, but there will not be any record at the state level. Records from the Alabama Dept. of Vital Statistics are relatively expensive - $12 per search last time I requested anything from them - and it's so unlikely that a record for 1853 would be located that it's not worth the money.
