Are you looking for something on these people? Carolyn Peters is a friend of mine. I also know some members of the Ruff family of Notasulga. I don't believe Notasulga has a newspaper - it's too small even for a weekly one. The obit would have probably appeared in a paper from one of the surrounding towns - Auburn, Opelika, Tallassee, or Tuskegee.

I have no idea which paper this appeared in, nor the date: WILLIAM BREWER RUFF Notasulga: The funeral for William Brewer Ruff, 93, of Notasulga, will be at 2 m, today, Sunday, Dec 29, 1991, at the Notasulga United Methodist Church in Notasulga, with burial in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Notasulga. The Rev. David Bromstad will officiate. Mr. Ruff, who died Friday, Dec 27, 1991, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, was born Oct 5, 1898. He was a longtime resident of Notasulga. He was an active member of the Notasulga United methodist Church fro many years and was a member of the choir for 75 years. Survivors include: there sisters, Lois R. Rountree of Montgomery; Elba R. Weldon of Hapeville, Ga., and Lorene R. Allen of Auburn; one brother, Robert R Ruff of Opelika; two step daughters: Mazell Morris of Notasulga and Carolyn Peters of Tallassee; two step sons, Marrell Haynie of Notasulga and Austin Haynie of Creedmoor, N.C., nine step granschildren, Daryl Weldon, Shonda Weldon, and Gene Morris, all of Notasulga, Dr. Kim Peters, Keith Peters and Klay Peters, all of Tallassee, Drew Haynie and Lettie Ann Cash, both of Creedmore, N.C., and Robert Haynie of Notasulga. The Methodist Men will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Patsy, I have been to the Macon County courthouse to look up records before. I don't believe a member of the public can do look-ups on death records. It's sort of a little money-making operation run by the state. Until 1996, you could only obtain death records from the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Montgomery. As of '96, they put some sort of computerized system on line where a clerk in any county office can access the state system, but unless you are lucky and find an accommodating person whose supervisor isn't around, they will charge you $12 - whether they find the record or not - and give you a death certificate. On one occasion I lucked out and went into the county clerk's office in another county (not Macon). The one lady who was there at the time did several look-ups for me for one fee, which was a good thing, because out of four or five things I was looking for, she could only find one. I am open to correction on this, because I've never tried to get a death record in Macon County, but in the other counties in Alabama, they won't just let you go look at the books, because it's all computerized. I know Macon does not have computers available to the public at the clerk's office, but they are very accommodating about letting you go into the back room to look at probate records, old marriage records, etc. You will probably just have to send the $12 to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Montgomery. All they need to find the record is the name, the county in which the person died, and the date (or as close to it as you can come).
Thanks you so much for the info, will see what I can come up with Patsy Sehoytwo@aol.com wrote: >Patsy, I have been to the Macon County courthouse to look up records before. >I don't believe a member of the public can do look-ups on death records. >It's sort of a little money-making operation run by the state. Does anyone know where the town of Buncomb was located? I think it had to have been around the outskirts of Montgomery somewhere. There was a house and farm in the area known as "the Wigglesworth place." This was in the 1940's and early to mid-'50's. Also, before the freeway, when Hwy 31 was the route from Montgomery back to Birmingham, we used to always stop at a clear, fast-running creek called Mortar Creek. In the summertime we were usually coming from either Panama City or just a trip to Montgomery to the old home place(s) and, with no air conditioning in the car, it was a great place to stop and wade, cool off and have a snack before heading on home towards Bham. Does Mortar Creek still exist? Thanks! Evelyn

My GGGrandfather and Grandmother Mounce are buried at the Fort Family Cemetery at Cotton Valley along with two of their grandchildren. All have tombstones there. Their son Virgil Mounce moved to Tuskegee in the late 1870s where they lived before moving to Birmingham. Virgil and his wife Mary Cofield had 9 children and 6 or 7 of them died before their move to Birmingham. I was hoping they may have been buried in Tuskegee. I do not know what their religeous belief was, so no help here. I do know they were close to the Perry family as I have a copy of a letter written in 1885 mentioning a member of the Perry family. Thanks for your efforts, Billy
