"Thomas Calvin Freeman, oldest son of Bailey and Mary Freeman, was born December 2nd, 1847, in Tallapoosa, County, Alabama. Died in Notasulga, Ala., June 18th 1932. His father, Bailey Freeman, died when Thomas C was only nine years of age, and being th eoldest of four children, he worked and helped his mother raise the family. He united with the Misssionary Baptist when young. On September 1st, 1867, he was married to Indiana Waller. To them were born seven children. She died in 1883 or 1882. In 1886 he united with the Primitive Baptist Church at Bethlehem in Notasulga, Ala. In 1889 he moved to Macon County near Bethlehem Church. The same year (1889) he married Miss Joe Merchant. To them were born two children. The same year (1889) he was given the custody of the meeting house and cemetery at Bethlehem, and he looked after the upkeep of both faithfully for 38 years. His second wife died in February, 1925. Till death his home was a place of welcome for his brethen and friends/ He is survivied by five of his nine children, namely: T. W. Freeman, Mrs. J. N. Norris, Mrs. J. W. Sanders and O.G. Freeman of Notasulga, Ala. . and Mrs. Arthur Page, Atlanta, Ga., who bear traits of character resembling their noble father - also by ten grandchildren and seven ggrandchildren, and many other relatives. His character through a long and usefu life, came fully up to the standard required of all men, and was temperate in all things and abstained from many ugly and useless habits. An impressive fuineral service was oncducted by Elder S. L. Hornsby of Tallassee, Ala., the pastor of Bethlehem church, assisted by Rev. C. T. Culpepper, amid a concourse of relatives and friends. Surely he was "a servant of the Lord." May we all, together with devoted sons and daughters, keep in memory the noble example of his sincere life and endeavor to model after same." /END/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- I have no idea where I got this nor any more information, you may pass it to any one interested. Hi, I am attempting to locate the original records of the Cubahatchee Baptist Church, of Cross Keys, Macon County. I understand that William T. Martin has written a book titled: "Cubahatchee Baptist Church of Christ church book, 1838-1850," published in 1992. I also understand that the preface of the book mentions that the records are at Samford University in Birmingham. I have attempted to contact the library at Samford (email and by phone), but I have been unable to get a human to respond. I checked their on-line catalog, but didn't find any entry for Cubahatchee, other than the one for the above mentioned book. So, does anyone on the list know what records are held at Samford? Does anyone live in Birmingham, that could check on the availability of filmed copies of the records? If you live within driving distance and can contribute to this project, please do! It's interesting to say the very least. Contact the county commissioner's office. Is Washington Chapel AME "African Methodist Episcopal"? The cemetaries are all segregated as you must know...but the good news is, if it's a church in Tuskegee, it probably has it's own cemetary. I saw several while driving through. Best bet would be to contact the church and see if they have records...especially since some of yours are not all that long ago. Good luck! Trisha
To find out, use this URL to the Alabama Department of Archives and History: http://www.archives.state.al.us/dataindex.html Click the "Newspapers on Microfilm" database link and you get a search screen. Enter Montgomery in the county and the name of the paper in the Title space and click Submit Query button. You will be surprised how many copies they have. They are mostly all available on interlibrary loan if you do not live in town. Evelyn I think the reference to sister and brother is like "sister in Christ" or "brother in Christ". Elizabeth Stiggins left the Baptist Church of Christ at Rehoboth 3-7-1835 and joined the newly forming Cubahatchee Baptist Church of Christ. It appears she attends many of the church conferences along side my family which take place at Carr's school house along Line Creek. Sarah Stiggins was Baptized on the Thursday following November 5th, 1842. Miss Nancy Stiggins was Baptized Sept.,20th 1844. Nancy Stiggins was given her letter to remove herself from the church on the third Lord's day in April 1846. Sarah Stiggins was also granted a letter of demission on the third Lord's day in July, 1848. Another letter was granted to Ann Stiggins 3td Lord's day June 1849 and was entered into the records as Ann Burdine. Elizabeth did the same 3td Lord's day in August 1849. I hope this helps. Carol, Thanks for this information. Does it give the first name of the female Stiggins who moved her letter in 1835? The "reference to brother and sister" is very confusing. I wonder what that meant?
