I am sure this has been hashed over and over again but..... I am wondering, exactly what 'records' are available -in- Macon County? What year did Macon County start requiring birth, death, marriage, etc.? Many counties I visit across the Internet on GENWEB have listed that early marriage record books are held in the courthouses. The only listing I have for my g-g-grandmother was as 'Addie'. Although one can never be sure, I feel this is a nickname for either Adeline or Adelaide. I can get two birds with one stone. William Harris was born around 1815 in SC. He married a Rachel, born around March 1823 in SC. They had several children in SC, moved to Franklin, Macon County, AL sometime between 1847 and 1857, and had some more children in AL. The known children are: Savannah(b. 1840 SC, never married), 'Judge' (b. 1847 SC, married a Rachel), Monroe (b. 1857 AL, married a Lucy), Alice (b 1860 AL, never married), Laura (1861-1945 AL, married William H. Carroll- both are buried at Salem Baptist Church, Notasulga, Macon County, AL), and Ed Herbert Harris (1865-1928 AL, married Lucy Emma Duke/Lowe- both buried near Laura and William Carroll). In the 1880 or 1900 census Rachel, Savannah, and Alice were living with Ed Herbert. I have been unable to locate the graves of anyone but Laura and Ed. I have no idea what county William and Rachel came from. I've done an extensive online search for their marriage record, but I could not find it. My cousin has a copy of of deed made in Upson County, Georgia, dated 30 January 1847, where I. C. Lamb of Guilford County, North Carolina, sold to T. B. Woilson, 1st district of originally Houston now Upson County, known as lot 291, containing 5 acres more or less. Isaac Lamb married Frances E. Glanton on 1 January 1839 in Upson County, Georgia. I believe that this Isaac Lamb could be the brother of my Jacob Lamb. Isaac C. Lamb is not found in 1860 so probably died between 1850 and 1860. Cynthia - I'm finding so many Harpers in AL, it's making me dizzy. I havn't even attempted to look at those in GA to any great degree, although I see there are a number there, too. I have only traced my Harpers bact to about the 1840's, as follows (a summary): My earliest Harper is an Ishmael Harper, b. abt. 1844 in SC. He formally married (1866), Angeline Greene (b. abt. 1948, SC) in1866, in Tuskegee, Macon Co., AL, after emancipation, when colored marriages became legal. Either or both Ishmael and Angeline may have been mulatto, slaves of some one of many Harpers who populated several counties in the western part of the state or a few on the eastern border. My suspicion is that they may were more likely owned by Harper and Greene descendants that lived or owned property in one of the eastern counties--Coosa, Montgomery, Lee, Russell, Macon, even Clay. I have not been successful in identifying the these families. Census records would lead me to believe that both Ishmael and Angeline were brought to AL by families that removed there from SC. This may not help you very much, but maybe you (and persons on the list) can help me! Good luck, Annette M. Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. (He was born in 1777 and died in 1834.) Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! I am researching a KELLEY/KELLY family that came from Macon County. A Methodist minister and his wife (don't know the first names) came from Macon County to LA before the Civil War. They had 4 sons - Isaac, John W., Albert Ellis, Frank - who were born in Macon County, although John W.'s tombstone indicates he was born in Troy, Pike County, in 1839.
