Anybody got any leads on the DeLoach's who resided near Creek Stand 1840-1860? Ralph Rushing Semmes, Alabama
Hi, Still searching for the parents of my great-grandfather John Griffin HOWELL. Rumor has it that John may have been born an "ARMSTRONG" (his mother may have been married multiple times or simply had children by multiple fathers...) John was born in May 1876 in Cleburne County, AL and was either black or mulatto. In 1899 and 1900, John was a student at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Macon County, AL (source: 1900 census Macon County, AL). Married Carry Eva MOORE in Warrior Stand, Macon County, AL (in 1900 or 1901) Between 1901 and 1920, the Howells lived in Randolph County, AL. Are there any Tuskegee Institute historians out there? I'm also hoping to find some school records on John G. Howell with the hopes that some family information might be listed. If you have any connections to this HOWELL line or can help with some Tuskegee information, I would be grateful! Regards, Dana L. Walker Los Angeles, CA [email protected]
Annette, I noticed your reply to Jack's message concerning Tuskegee. You said you grew up there. Last summer, I had the opportunity to stop in Tuskegee on my way home to TX from vacation. By chance, I happened to meet an elderly man who has lived in Tuskegee most of his 83-84 years. His last name was SEGREST and after talking with him a few minutes, we discovered we were related. His grandmother was a NOBLE and the niece of my g-g-g-grandmother, who was also a NOBLE. Mr. SEGREST has sent me some information copied from a publication called TAP ROOTS. I understand there are many editions of this publication, published by the Genealogical Society of East Alabama, Inc. What I'd like to know is, does the Genealogical Society of East Alabama still exist? I'm hoping you might know or possibly someone on the Macon County list might know. My g-g-grandparents (Margaret Anna & Robert MIMS) left the Tuskegee area in the early 1870s to go to TX. Margaret Anna (b. 3-26-1852 in Macon Co., AL), known as "Annie", was a RAINES, daughter of Allen RAINES & Margaret Brown NOBLE. Margaret Brown NOBLE (b. 10-27-1826; d. 11-8-1916) was the daughter of Philemon NOBLE & Frances Babsen GLENN. My g-g-g-grandparents (Margaret Noble RAINES & Allen RAINES) are buried in the Tuskegee City Cemetery. My g-g-g-g-grandparents (Frances Glenn NOBLE & Philemon NOBLE) are buried in the NOBLE Cemetery, about 8 miles west of Tuskegee off old Hwy. 80. From what I understand, this cemetery is sometimes referred to as the COLE Cemetery or the MARTIN Cemetery, as both family names can be found there. I know this old cemetery is very overgrown and not easily accessible. Has anyone on the Macon County list ever visited this cemetery? I'd like to hear from you if you have. I didn't have the chance to do so during my short visit to Tuskegee. If any of these surnames (MIMS, RAINES, NOBLE, GLENN) sound familiar or connect with anyone on the list, please contact me. I'd really appreciate any information. Thanks for your time, Margaret Ann Mims Moody <[email protected]>
Mary Alice Allen married a Robert (BoB) Daughtery and lived between Shorter and Milstead, Al. He operated a farm there. Seeking family ties if you ahve information please e-mail me Mike Allen Shelby Co, Al

Jack - I grew up in Tuskegee. There has been a VA Hospital there for many years, intended initially for colored vets. Today, it is a much more limited facility, but it is still utilized. I don't know if their archived records would still be there... could be in a more regional facility in Montgomery, Birmingham or even Atlanta. You could start by calling the V.A. in Tuskegee. The phone number is 334/727-0550. Good luck! Annette
In trying to locate my father, information has led me to believe that he died in a military hospital in Tuskegee, AL. Is there such a facility there? Social security information indicates dod 15 Nov 1989. Is there any information available from this facility. What is the procedure for getting a death certificate from the state of Alabama? Any help would be appreciated. Jack
Hi Sue, The Birmingham Public Library (downtown) has extensive census records as well as CSA, etc. and they do have 1850 Macon. There are index books for each state showing the county along with the name. They also have microfilm readers with attached printers (I think the cost is 50 cents per copy.) The library is easily accessed from the freeway and has parking right beside it in a fenced lot with security guards. All these records are in the Julia Tutwiler Center which is accessed from the 3rd floor across a covered breezeway. Evelyn Leslie
Hi, I am trying to find Joel Grantham son of Herrin Grantham. They are listed on the 1850 Pike Co. Census as H. Grantham and one of the children is Joel age 7. Herrin Grantham appears on the 1860 Macon Co. AL Census. Would anyone with access to the 1850 Pike and/or 1860 Macon Co. Census do a lookup for me? I would like very much to know Herrin's wife's name and also the rest of the children's names to include Joel Henry who was b. 1842-43 in AL. Thanks in advance to anyone who can do the lookup for me. #################################################### CAN SOME ONE FROM MACON CO. POST MORE INFO ON THIS !!! #################################################### This is a copy of a post that did not make it to the list. REPORT FROM MACON COUNTY, ALABAMA Engineer, Glenn Drummonds (via [email protected]) RECORDS RESCUE... MACON COUNTY, ALABAMA Twenty volunteers began remmoving documents from the semi-trailers storage, cleaned dust and spider from the documents, and made inventory cards on the morning of May 1, 1999. More volunteers are needed as there are three semi-trucks with old records. 174 volumes of Circuit Court and other records were recovered. 35 storage boxes of Probagte Court "Loose papers" were moved plus two large boxes of "Loose papers" that were spilled from their containeers. Inventory cards were made for each volume; the "loose papers" have not been inventoried. The documents range in date from 1834 to 1957 with many in the 1880-1910 era. A random sampling of documents removed from the trailer on May 1 follows. No attempt to sort or otherwise categorize by source or topic--this will come later; but, this is only a trial format: Am just picking out a "sampling" of what has already been inventoried: Macon County Circuit Court, Appearance Docket, 1833-61 Macon County Circuit Court, State Final Record 1890-1903 Macon County Circuit Court, Final Records "A" , 1883-92 Macon County Circuit Court, State Bar Docket, 1855-65 Macon County Circuit Court, Trial Docket, 1839-41 Macon County Court, Minutes, 1843-48 Civil Writ Docket, 1899, 1905 Execution Docket, 1842-49 Sheriff's Docket, 1855-70 Appearance Docket, 1845-54 Others... Glen Drummond, Engineer, has a mission to provide proper storage for the records in these trailers and has solicited the aid of many; but, in particular...the aid of Michael Matthews of the Auburn City Library System to help catalogue and file the records. Drummonds says..."It will take some time and require volunteers to ehlp do some of the "grunt" work. He needs help in going through and moving the records so-ooooooooo if anyone is interested in helping, please contact him at the County Engineer's Office (1-334-724-2619). It can be a lot of fun when you find handwritten records that are more than 160 years old." Maybe some of you on the Macon County Rootsweb circuit would like to help? Also, these records involve surrounding counties of Macon and even some Georgia areas. PLEASE HELP! Physical or financial help for this worthy cause will be accepted. What can those of us out of staters do to help.....this sounds like a fascinating, and fun project!!!! Anything at all? If financial help is all we can do...let us know where to send it, please!! The work you are doing is priceless, and selfless. I saw the basement of Goliad Co. Texas, and the abandoned third floor of Greer Co., OK in shambles, when I worked as a field landman years ago...important original documents and court cases thrown everywhere.....I was physically up to my knees in paperwork.. I literally cried when I realized it would one day surely be discarded as worthless!! Cheers to you for your quiet heroism!

Hi folks. I am including a copy of a posting by Dorothy Ann Folmar of Pike Co. She has agreed to let me post it here as an example of what an article in the Heritage book might look like. Some of you have asked about what to include. I hope this helps. Pike Co. List: The following is an article (still in draft form), over 900 words in length, which I wrote re Christopher Stroud for the Heritage book. Articles can also be written on his children. Christopher Stroud Christopher ("Kit") Stroud is believed to have come to Pike County, AL from Columbus County, NC. His wife was Charity Wilson of Columbus County, a daughter of Edward Wilson & his first wife. Christopher first appears in the 1840 Census of Pike County, he & his wife being between 30 & 40 years of age with 2 boys under five years of age. Christopher is listed in the 1850 Census of Pike County as being 48, his wife Charity as 45, both born in NC, with children Edward, 14, David, 11, Nancy, 9, & William, 7, all born in AL. In the 1860 Census of Pike County, Christopher is living on Hallsville Post Office route. He & Charity are both listed as being 58 with children Nancy, 19, William W., 15, & an infant, Randolph, 3 months of age. Christopher & Charity's son Edward was living next door to them with his wife & baby. In the 1870 Census of Pike County, Christopher is listed as living in Goshen Hill Beat, 68 years of age & Charity as 65. Living in the house with them were Nancy, whose age was given as 22, Randolph, 12, William, 7, Charity Henderson, 2, & Martha Andrews, 12. Christopher & Charity lived at what was then called Pilley's Crossroads in the vicinity of the present intersection of Hwy 231 & Hwy 29 on the west side of Troy. Family names of some of their neighbors, extending from Troy to the present Youngblood, Shellhorn & Ansley areas & through Hallsville & the present Goodhope area to Goshen Hill, were Jordan, Fowler, Sims, Bailey, Stephens, Spivey, Carlisle, Morrison, Phillips, Folmar, Davis & Davison, Carnley, Rhodes, Clark, Redmon, Mills & McCormick. Christopher & Charity became members of Beulah Primitive Baptist Church in Troy on September 26, 1857, being admitted by letter. It is not known where their membership was prior to then. Beulah Church records state that Kit Stroud died when he was nearly 70 years of age & in 1874 the records state that Charity died in May of that year, her age unknown. Apparently Christopher & Charity had four children, Edward, David, Nancy & William. William died unmarried as a Confederate soldier at Gettysburg. He was in Co. "B" of the 8th AL Infantry Regiment. David served in Co. "I" of the 15th AL Infantry Regiment. Edward apparently served in both the 8th & the 15th Infantry Regiments. He was discharged due to disability. Edward Stroud was born about 1837. He married Mary Davis on May 13, 1858. He appears in the 1860 Census of Pike County as Edward Stroud, 23, born in AL, with wife Mary, 22, born in GA, & their son, George A., age 1, born in AL. According to a grandson of his brother David, Edward was killed in a train or railroad accident. He may have died before 1870. Edward & Mary's son George Anderson Stroud was born Mar. 19, 1859. He married Malissa Josephine Morrison in Pike Co., AL on Oct. 24, 1879. Their 10 children were Mary Frances Stroud Fowler born 1880, James Anderson Stroud born 1882, Minnie Dell Stroud Stephens born 1884, Mattie Ophelia Stroud Byrd Manning born 1887, George Washington Stroud born 1890, Verdie C. Stroud born 1891, John Darrie Stroud born 1894, Bertha Stroud born 1896, David D. Stroud born 1899, & Radar Lee Stroud born in 1902. David Stroud was born March 2, 1839. He married Martha Low or Lou Davison on July 26, 1866. She was born June 20, 1851, a daughter of "Uncle Jimmy Davison," who at one time owned a great amount of land in the Goshen Hill area of Pike County & northeastward. It was through this marriage that David & his descendants acquired land in the Goshen-Elam Church vicinity. Children of David & Martha were: 1) John J. Stroud born 1869, died 1886. 2) Nancy Arkansas Stroud, called "Cannie," born in 1872, married David Franklin Youngblood, died in San Antonio, TX on Feb. 24, 1859. 3) Lavada Lenora Stroud born 1874, married Robert Edward Bryan, died Feb. 26, 1953, buried at Elam Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Goshen, Pike Co., AL. 4) Alice Amelia Stroud born 1876, married Robert E. Lee Rushing, died Mar. 3, 1969 in San Antonio, TX. 5) Walter Wallace Stroud born Oct. 10, 1878, married Charlotte Lee Raley, died in TX. 6) William Wilson Stroud, twin of Walter Wallace Stroud, born Oct. 10, 1878, married Minnie Raley, died Feb. 7, 1961, buried at Elam Church Cemetery near Goshen, Pike Co., AL. 7) Minnie Dell Stroud born 1880, died 1881, buried at Elam. 8) Annie Bell Stroud born 1883, married Clem Bryan, died 1970 in West Palm Beach, FL. 9) Ruby Merle Stroud, born 1894, died 1898, buried at Elam. Nancy Stroud married first Willis Henderson on Dec. 5, 1867. They had a daughter Charity Henderson who appears as age 2, living with her mother in Christopher & Charity's household, in the 1870 Census. On February 27, 1872 Nancy married Charner Leach. Charner appears in the 1880 Census of Pike County as age 38 with wife Nancy 38 & his sons John, 9, Listian A., 7, Alva F., 6, his daughter Sarah E., 3, & Charity U. Henderson, age 13. Charner & Nancy moved to Texas about 1895. Nancy died on January 26, 1922 at age 74 & is buried at Pecan Wells Cemetery, Hamilton, Texas. Nancy Stroud Henderson's daughter Charity seems to have been called both "Charity U." & "Callie Ula" Henderson. She was born in 1868 at Goshen Hill & died Dec. 4, 1904. Her husband was John Ellis Sewell. Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL Second posting by Dorothy. The Heritage books contain info about ancestors & also info about the history of churches, communities, clubs, organizations, etc. & also tributes & memorials. I think I heard someone talking at the last meeting about putting in info about the early railroads of Pike County, too. You can check the following web site for further info on the Heritage books & progress in the different counties of Alabama, although the site hasn't been updated yet to include Pike: http://www.mindspring.com/~awillcut/heritage.htm -- Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL Good luck to all. Hi List, Does anyone have any information concerning Waugh, Alabama, and particularly cemeteries there? My mother and father used to drive my grandfather there to visit his parents' (my great-grandparents) graves. My mother, who is now 87, wants to go back and my brother and I want to take her, but have no idea where to look. Our family records say that Eli Radford Sizemore and his wife are buried "behind the old Gilder place along with one of their sons and two of their grandchildren." If anyone has any information at all or who we might contact about the history of Waugh, we would really appreciate it!
