    3. Desperately seeking information on my paternal grandfather and his parents. My grandfather was William Curtis Cannon-called Curtis or Curt, b. ?? 1904. Died in 1927 in Texas train accident at age 23. He was 6 yrs old in 1910 census for Macon County. My father Jesse R. Cannon was only 4 months old, his brother 2 when he died. My grandparents were only married for 4 years-she was a widow at age 19. My grandma went to S.C. to live with her parents who had moved there from AL. G-grandparents Felix "Watt" Cannon and Annie-on 1910 Macon census they are 29 and 23 respectively, so birthdates are 1880-81 and 1886-87. Married in 1902-03. My father lived with them for 1 year just before entering Navy in 1944. They lived in Franklin vicinity. Hardly ever saw them after that, so I know nothing about them. There are 2 Felix Cannons in 1910 census. Other Felix is 7 years older, married to Zadie Crapps and had one daughter Lillian. This could possibly be a cousin, but I have no knowledge of that yet. My objective is to learn my g-grandmother's maiden name to add another branch to the family tree. 3. Laura, Have been saving your post meaning to reply. Was wondering if you have any of our MIMS, WOOD, JOHNSON and DUKE lines that married into the WALKER family. My greatgrandfather lived at Shorter and have been working on this line a long time. His first marriage appears to be to a Mims that is recorded in Pike Co. and his third appears to be to a Wood in recorded in Russell County. The second was to a Zachary. There may have been a fourth but not sure about that. He may have been related to Johnson, so someone in the family told me. Jacque

    1. Re: Macon County Records
    2. Karen - Thank you for this information on Macon Co. research. My observation of Robert Perry's list of cemetaries in Macon Co. is that the list omits cemetaries which are traditionally African-American. Noticably missing is Greenwood Cemetary, one of the largest in the area, and the burial place of nearly half of Tuskegee's Af.-Am. citizenary. There is another large Af.-Am. cemetary right across the road from the Tuskegee cemetary which should not be overlooked by those doing family research in the county. (The name of this cemetary escapes me now, but I will post it later if I can find the information in my notes.) And, there is the cemetary at Tuskegee University, burial place of such noteables as Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and a number of other historic figures who helped to build the university and the early Greenwood community. There are others: Fort Hull Cemetary, just outside of Tuskegee and many other smaller plots, mostly owned by and/or linked to the small community churches to which maintain them. It is not uncommon, of course, that documentation on Af.-Am. populations is ignored or disregarded in most data collected by white-folks for other white folks. I point this out merely for those doing continuing research, so that Perry's list is not viewed as "complete"; and, hopefully, someone else out there will be encouraged to find, document, and contribute the data/records on those cemetaries/persons omitted from previous listings. Thanks for your contribution.... it is helpful. Sometimes is useful to know where NOT to look, too. Church (old New Georgia) Bradford's Chapel Methodist Church Segrest-Gibson Family Cemetery Cooper Famiy Cemetery Neals Chapel Methodist Church Sears Famiy Cemetery Ramsey Memorial Presbyterian Church Segrest Cemetery at Cloughs Jordan-Thompson Cemetery Rush Family Cemetery Forgive any spelling mistakes in this listing, I very quickly copied the index. The only names and addresses I have for either a professional researcher or Historical Society are in present-day Bullock Co. (Union Springs.) However, this area was part of Macon Co. (don't have in front of me the date Bullock was formed, but it seems like it was around 1870.) If you are interested in these addresses I'll be glad to post them. 1. Re: Need help please - Macon Co.
    2. Victor - If you happen to find someone actually living IN Macon Co. who is also doing research there, I would sure love to know about it. I grew up in Macon Co. (Tuskegee)--living in Washington, D.C. now--and, as an adult, I have made several trips "home" to do family research there. All too often, my visits there were not long enough to gather all that I needed. Several trips to the court house (Office of Probate) proved to be somewhat helpful, but some of the records I need to research--land records, for instance--are located in another office, not Probate. Visiting the Probate Office takes a fair amount of time and patience; their records are not the worst I have seen, but they are not the best either, and it can take a while to find a single record. Like most small county courthouses, there is only a staff of two, women who are friendly, but without much time to be all that helpful; so you are pretty much on your own when you go there. Tuskegee does not have an archivist, historical or genealogical society. The closest formal archivist is in Auburn (Lee Co.) I believe. There is also an archivist at Tuskegee University, but I believe the focus of his research is more of a general nature... the historical, cultural, socio-economic, educational and history development of the county and African American people there; slavery, and especially of the school's history and development are part of the school's holdings (at Hollis Burke library). There was a woman in Tuskegee, an avid genealogist, who died not too long ago. Her name was Mrs. Segrest. The Segrest name goes waaaay back in Macon Co. history; and, there are Segrest descendants living in Tuskegee today. During a trip to Tuskegee not too long ago, I spoke with her son (in his 40's and not at all into genealogy), who thought that most of his mother's historical/genealogical material and records had been donated to the genealogical society in Auburn (see USGenWeb > Alabama > Lee County ). You might try there to find a record of persons buried at Tuskegee cemetary, for instance. (I have tried to find cemetary records for Macon Co., but there does not seem to be any central repository for these records; the "keepers" of the different cemetaries seem to hold the historical records.... so you have to first identifiy the cemetary's caretaker.) Anyway, I thought I would share my experience. Maybe you'll get some clues that will prove to be useful. ...and, again, I ask that you share any sources or the name of any individual that may offer assistance with Macon Co. research. Annette Researching... mother's surnames: HARPER GREENE SPEED TARVER LENNARD/LEONARD LANE father's surnames: KROUSE BESTED(A/ER) AUSTIN PATRICK ... mostly in AL counties.
