Alexis Howard came from Caswell county, North Carolina. He was the son of Henry Howard and Mary McAden. Mary was a daughter of the famed Presbyterian preacher the Reverend Hugh McAden. He married first Lettie Stokes about 1822 and had Henry. He then married Susan Slade, daughter of Isabella Graves Slade and Thomas Slade. Isabella was sister to Azariah Graves, a general and respected citizen of Caswell county who was on of their first sheriffs. After Susan's death, Alexis married Mary Kerr Graves, sister to Frances Graves (both were daughters of Azariah Graves and wife Elizabeth Williams). Frances was also the mother of Elizabeth Graves Settle, who in turn married Henry Howard, Alexis's son. Alexis' offspring: by Lettice Stokes: 1. Dr. Henry Allen Howard (b. July 18, 1823 in Caswell county, m. Elizabeth Graves Settle-daughter of Josiah Settle of Rockingham, NC and Frances Graves Settle. Henry died in Atlanta Aug. 11, 1891). by Susan Slade: 1. Thomas--married Hattie Stafford. 2. Isabella--married Azariah Graves, Jr., son of Azariah Graves and Elizabeth Williams of Caswell, NC. by Mary Kerr Graves: 1. Azariah Graves Howard (1843-1923), served in Confederacy, married Katie Graves in Tuskegee, Macon, Alabama December 30, 1869. Moved to Atlanta where he died in 1923. 2. Susan Ann Alexis (known as "Sunia")-b. 1850, married Thomas Slade, shows in 1880 census back in Caswell county, North Carolina. 3. Betty Williams Howard- b. abt. 1851, unmarried and living with A.G. and Katie Howard in the 1880 census in Atlanta. By 1850, Alexis' family and Dr. Henry's family were all in Tuskegee, near each other (on the same or next page of the census of 1850. But, although Dr. Henry's family shows up there in 1860, I have not been able to find Alexis or Mary. Yet Azariah Howard was married there in 1869, so that question remains. Kesiah BULLOCK, is in Chilton Co., AL., US Census 1880, where she died, 1888. Any information appreciated, thanks. Peg
Pat, this Mason Harwell is of some interest to me. I am not related to this man, but he may have some kind of ties to people to whom I am related, if not through a family connection, then perhaps business or neighborhood. In particular, I am interested in Littleton T.P. Harwell, of Morgan Co., GA. His sister (belived), Mary B., married first a Robert JONES and later a Elam FITZPATRICK. The Elam Fitzpatricks lived in Macon Co., AL. It is believed that Robert Jones was from NC... The Fitzpatricks originated in VA, then verioius of them went to GA, then to several AL counties. No GRAVES or HOWARD have shown up in my research. But, let me know if any of these surnames show up in your research and I can write to you privately to give you some inking of how some of these names match-up.... PARHAM, BRANCH, LEWIS, HARPER, FITTS, JONES, SPEED, FITZPATRICK, DRYER, DRISKILL, WALTON, GREEN. ...kind of a stretch, I know; but, all of these surnames have turned up in my research, in AL, GA, and NC. and they are connected, in one way or another. Thanks to all who answered my call about the ALMACON list. Annette

Hello? Anybody there? I haven't seen any ALMACON posts lately. Annette Washington, DC
I am looking for James Isaac Willis and wife Catherine Ross. They were married in Tuskogee, Macon Co. AL in 2Nov 1842 by their bible. Their first 5 children were born in AL. John Ross Willis @ 1845, Elizabeth born @ 1847, Sarah Jane Fletcher Willis born 24 June 1849 and J.H. b. @ 1850/51 but I can't find them anywhere in the 1850 census. Has anyone run onto them. James' father is believed to be Joshua haven't found him either. Cathrines father is in MS along with her grandfather. Other family names are Wiggins, McFarland and Wiseman. Any help would be greatly appreciated. They are none of the J or James in the indexes so they must be living with someone else. Thanks Penny
Hi, Annette. Mason Harwell's gggreat-granddaughter here. Yes, it is active, but not much has been going on here, though. I did find out a piece of information this morning. My ggggreat-grandfather, Alexis Howard, settled in Macon (Tuskegee) after moving from Caswell county, North Carolina about 1850. Although he and third wife Mary K. Graves and kids were listed as late as 1855 (Alabama state census), I can't find them afterwards. Alexis was already 57 at that point, so he may have died in the interim, but I couldn't find Mary, either. Yet, I just found out that their eldest son Azariah Graves Howard married Katie Graves in MACON county December 30, 1869. This indicates that at least some of the family was there as late this time. I already knew Henry (my gggreat-grandfather and Alexis' son by first marriage) was in Macon, then Montgomery by 1880, but knew nothing about Alexis' other immediate family until this clue broke. This is a little confusing line for me; Alexis' daughter by Mary, Sunia, married and settled back in Caswell county (by 1880), yet in 1880 A.G. and Katie were in Atlanta at this time. This line ties in with Mason Harwells', because Henry's son Josiah (Alexis' grandson) married Mollie Harwell, Mason's daughter, and thus became my gggrandparents. You or anyone else can help me out a bit here?
