3. Hi, I looked in my cemetery records. Sandy Ridge is, if I remember correctly, near the Butler County boarder. In the cemetery records I have I found a Charls Sims and an Ocie Sims, both on one tombstone with no dates in the Payne Cemetery. THe Payne Cemetery is in the Sandy Ridge area. This could be th children of J. F. Sims and Susan. Other than that, I have not been able to find more on this Sims family in the Sandy Ridge area. 1. [ALLOWNDE] Book..not exhaustive Check BOOKS WE OWN LIST
2. Gladys, As I have said, this book has errors in some places and it does not include everything but is VERY interesting and informative....and if it HAS your people it can get you started in the right direction. MUCH of it IS reliable. (sorry I don't find any of yours in the index) I have no idea if there has been a reprint RECENTLY, but there were copies available two or three years ago, of a version with index....from the LOWNDES COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY P.O. Box 266 Hayneville, AL 36040 This is the full information: LOWNDES COURT HOUSE [note: this was the first name of Hayneville] A Chronicle of Hayneville, an Alabama Black Belt Village 1820- 1900 by Mildred Brewer Russell reprinted by THE PARAGON PRESS, Montgomery, AL The book is paperback with a plastic spine BUT as I said, I don't know if it is still available (I don't live in AL) ====================================================== another note on research: Rootsweb has a site where you can find "BOOKS WE OWN" about the area and family surname books, genealogy and history in general....LOOKUPS ARE OFFERED FREE by the owners of the books who, like me, want to encourage others to do family research: this is the URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/ BooksWeOwn You will have a GREAT time hunting there, Carole In a message dated 1/8/02 4:58:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, CarBurCo writes: > GladysNRon@aol.com > To: ALLOWNDE-L@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <18d.182e826.296c810c@aol.com> > Subject: [ALLOWNDE] LOWNDES COURT HOUSE by Mildred Brewer Russell. > > --part1_18d.182e826.296c810c_boundary > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > > Hi, my name is gladys mchenry. 1. [ALLOWNDE] Lovett and research
2. LORA, Your LOVETTS are a bit too recent for the little Chronicle written by Mrs. Russell. It covers 1820-1900 and not exhaustively, so just because your people are not in the index does not mean they were never in the area. There IS in fact, one LOVETT mentioned: SOPHIA LOVETT married SEABORN WILLIAMS on 17 March 1835. They were married by D. PEEBLES. Sorry I could not be of more help, but it is possible that the War interfered and the Lovetts moved elsewhere....possibly Montgomery or Autauga Counties....or Dallas County. All was in turmoil in the 1860's and many were disposessed or moved west or to the cities. Birmingham was built AFTER 1869 and many moved there....before that, the area was known as Elyton...Jefferson County. Good hunting, Carole In a message dated 1/8/02 4:58:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, CarBurCo writes: > I would appreciate a look up in the book, LOWNDES COURT HOUSE by > Mildred Brewer Russell, of the following with as much info as possible > thank you: > > LOVETT, John Andrew b: 12/1861 d: 1/17/1941 > wife > Minnie "AUSTIN" LOVETT b: 3/1862 d: 2/13/1924 > > Looking also for the parent's of the above which are my great grand > parents. > I do know that Minnie's mothers name was: Malinda AUSTIN, but this is > all i know about her? > > Thank you in advance for any, information, help or direction. > > Lora > Lmchipmunk@juno.com > Panama City, FL >

3. Hi, List! I can't remember if I've asked this before, so if I have, it's probably been awhile. I'm looking for any info anyone may have on my ggg grandfather, Charles Beck, b abt 1803 in GA,and/or my ggg grandmother, Catherine Campbell, b abt 1805 in North Carolina. They were married 30 Oct 1830 in Lowndes Co., but I'm not sure if they lived there. They had 7 children: Andrew Quincey (he went by Andrew and Quincey, very confusing!) Catherine M. Flora Ann Eliza M. Charles J. Susan J. William Jefferson (who later went by Jefferson) The kids were born between 1838 and 1847 all in Alabama. The family is in AR by the 1850 census. Could anyone with access to any records please do a lookup on Charles Beck for me? This family is my brick wall. I can only track Andrew Quincey (who luckily is my line) as far as 1870 in AR, and he's dead by 1880. I'd appreciate any little shred of info. Thanks! 1. [ALLOWNDE] Newspaper Transcriptions From Montgomery,AL Newspapers (1821-1865)
2. !!!BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT!!! DEATH, MARRIAGE AND PROBATE NOTICES FROM MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA NEWSPAPERS (1821-1865) This is to inform you about the upcoming release of my latest book, Death, Marriage And Probate Notices From Montgomery, Alabama Newspapers (1821-1865). This is the first volume in a continuing series of newspaper transcriptions related to Montgomery, Alabama. The collection contains approximately 2,000 newspaper notices. The collection begins with 1821 when Montgomery's first newspaper was established, and continues forward through 1865 with transcriptions from many of the newspapers which once operated in the city of Montgomery. The book has approximately 350 pages, hard-back binding and includes a detailed index. It contains newspaper transcriptions from surviving issues of: The Montgomery Republican (1821-1824), The Alabama Journal (1825-1850), The Montgomery Advertiser (1837-1865), The Montgomery Advertiser & State Gazette (1854-1859), The Planter's Gazette (1829 &1832), Tri-Weekly Flag & Advertiser (1847), The State Register (1852), The Daily Messenger (1856-1857), The Daily Confederation (1858), The Montgomery Weekly Post (1860) and The Montgomery Mail (1855-1865). This collection is of special interest for anyone doing research in Central Alabama. Montgomery's newspapers devoted a lot of coverage to the surrounding counties of Autauga, Lowndes, Dallas, Butler, Macon, and Pike Counties. In some instances these early newspapers contained valuable information that has since been lost from county records. An example would be the earliest marriage records of Autauga County (1818-1830's). The early newspapers of Montgomery included many marriage notices from Autauga County for these "missing years." The newspapers of Montgomery also included note-worthy items from correspondents in eastern counties such as Chambers and Russell Counties, and western counties such as Perry and Marengo Counties, from Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville, and even from Columbus, Macon and Milledgeville in the state of Georgia. In the early years, Montgomery's newspapers included items from the early settlements of Cahaba, Claiborne, Blakeley, and even a few from early Washington County. Throughout the Civil War, the newspapers periodically published casualty reports from the battlefields related to Alabama soldiers and military outfits from across the state, and lists of the dead provided by military hospitals near the battlefronts. The anticipated release date for this book is March 1, 2002. The book will be regularly priced at $28 per copy, plus $2.38 sales tax and $3.00 postage/handling (Total $33.38 per copy). However, I am offering a discounted price of $24 per copy, plus $2.04 sales tax and $3 postage/handling for all book orders received by February 28, 2002 (Total: $29.04 per copy).
