Then get the handwritten copy where it was written in the book I suppose. I think there you can see where the transcribing error occured. I think William meant to be listing his wife first and not a child named Unity. Just my opinion--everyone needs to look at the original before deciding what or who he was listing. From that time on the name Whity was used. To me if the child was not listed in the 1860 census nor with Unity in 1870 the proof is there. Good Luck

The Francis Marion Davis you refer to was of the family of John (T) Davis who moved from Lowndes Co to AR abt 1859/60. The children of Hardy Royal and Nancy Davis do not have the same initials as the ones you list. They were in 1860 Lowndes census. The dtr of William and Unity Royal was Mary Frances a girl. She mrd Henry Bird. How do you connect to Malcy and Henry Davis or do you? Thanks Irma H Dean

    3. Wilson Davis married Eliza Pearce on May 6 1841, marriage book 1, page 330, married by Stephen Searls, MG. I checked the 1860 US Census and do not find Wilson or his family members. I check my very limited cemetery listings, no finding. I checked marriage records for the children, no luck. Seems they may have moved before the 1860 Census. At one point in time, many years ago, the court took it upon itself to retype some of the pages in Will Book C. These pages were originally hand written. My guess, and it is a guess, is that the pages were so badly damanged, through time or other means, that the people at the courthouse typed them. When these wills were originally entered into court, they did not have typewriters. In transcribing these will, I have personally seen typos of many kinds. Reading the old handwriting, as most of us have experienced, can be very diffidult. Thus Unity may very wll have become Whity. That is my two cents worth.

    2. I was referring to Monroe Co., MS where young William Davis of Lowndes Co., AL made his last (and only?) will. I am guessing that he was there getting ready to do battle with the Aggressors from the North - possibly in an Alabama unit of the Army of Tennessee. In the CW, on average, the odds were about 1 in 4 of dying in battle (both sides). Adrian

    2. I have not seen the Monroe Co. will of William Davis but have a poor copy of his widow Unity's Lowndes Co. petition for probate: ".... She further represents with your honor that the petitioner and the following named children, minors, to wit, Whity (sic),....." As I read it, "Whity" is the mother Unity. She is unmarried and in the home of her parents on the 1850 Lowndes census. And there is no Whity with her on the 1860 Lowndes or 1870 Crenshaw censuses. Adrian Davis

Whity could easily look like Unity with some of the fancy writing they did back then. They are William Davis's children but did they go by the name of their step-father. There was a case in court with Marmaduke Deavers trying to take over Sampson Davis's estate and that might be when someone was named guardians of william and Unity's children.

Surnames: Caldwell, Arnold Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JS.2ADE/700 Message Board Post: Seeking information regarding whereabouts of Spencer L. (S. L.) Caldwell and spouse Mary Ann. They are listed on the 1850 Lowndes Co., AL census with their new daughter Sophronia and Mary Ann's son by her first marriage Steth M. Carter. The family reappears in McMinn Co., TN on the 1880 census but I am unable to account for them from 1850-1880. A S. L. Caldwell is listed as a Pvt. in the Alabama State Reserves which may account for his disappearance circa 1860 but I am unable to locate any info regarding this enlistment or service. Mary Ann's maiden name is Arnold and she may have been living with friends and/or relatives in either Lowndes Co., AL. All of their children are indicated as having been born in AL which places them their until at least 1866 (youngest child is 14 in 1880 census). Their children are: Sophronia born Oct 1849 Spivy (S. S.) born July 1853, Buchanan born 1857, Ida born 1859, Ella born 1861, Callie born 1863, Julia born 1866. Sophronia died as a child in Gordonville, Lowdnes Co., AL Oct 1855 and is buried in Gordonville cemetery. Spencer L. was born in GA (his father was born in NC and mother in GA) Mary Ann Arnold was born in TN. Would also like marriage info for Spencer L. Caldwell and Mary A. Carter/Arnold. Believe they were married in Lowdnes Co.

Frances M. m-Rhona, they never had any children, but was guardian of the Royal children. I have the Will of Frances. Frances served in the CW. Here is his Obit.F.M. Davis, 82, died this morning at 7 o'clock at his home five miles from Texarkana on the Line Ferry road. This has been the Davis home place for more than forty years, and the deceased was a most familiar figure about the place to passersby who had occasion to use this road in coming into and going out of town and all of whom knew him well. Mr. Davis cane to this section of the country long before Miller County was known, and when the entire section was embraced in the boundaries of what was then known as Lafayette County. He promptly enlisted when the Civil war came serving with distinction throughout the entire period, and returning to Miller County at its close. He is a member of the A.P. Hill Camp, United Confederate Veterans. He is survived by his wife. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock at the Harmony church, Rev. John Winham, of Fort Worth officiating. The services at the grave will be in charge of the Masonic lodge.
