I'm looking for information on David Hinton Middleton. First, I'm requesting information on his ancestry and second, where he might have gotten his middle name of "HINTON". I have sisters, Mary and Martha Hinton who had married a Joel Lane. Another surname that is frequent in my family tree. Further information that I DO have for David Hinton Middleton is that he was born March 24, 1844 (unknown location) and died June 17, 1923 (unknown location). He married Maria Ellen Dudley (unknown date & location). She was born January 26, 1853 (unknown location) and died October 13, 1924 (unknown location). They had only one child that I know of, Carrie Manola Middleton, born August 12, 1886 in Collirene, Lowndes Co., Alabama and died April 11, 1956 in Lowndes Co., Alabama. She married Francis Gordon "Frank" Lyon August 03, 1913 in Collirene, Lowndes Co., Alabama. Any further help will be greatly appreciated. Ric Gordon in Texas
SURNAMES: GRANT, SHADDOCK, SHADRICK, SHARP, SHARPE, BLALOCK Wiley Cleveland GRANT was born 18 April 1830. This information is as per a "Pedigree Chart" my grandfather hired a "professional" genealogist to research and compile about 1973. He supposedly came by this information via the family bible of "W.C. Grant." According to "Descendents of Samuel SHADDOCK' posted on the internet, Wiley Cleveland Grant's mother, Abigail Ann SHADDOCK or SHADRICK, was born "before 1786." That would make her at least 44 years old when he was born. Wiley Cleveland GRANT died 2 July 1870 at Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. He married 1st) Martha Eliza SHARP or SHARPE. She was born 27 Jul 1831 and died 10 Oct 1863 at Pea Ridge, Dallas County, Alabama. He married 2nd) Mary Murphy in August of 1864. The parents of Cleveland GRANT are James W. (possibly Wiley) GRANT and Abigail Ann SHADDOCK or SHADRICK. The parents of Ann SHADDOCK, born bef. 1786, probably in Perry County, Alabama, are Samuel SHADDOCK and his wife Prudence of South Carolina. The daughter of Cleveland GRANT and Martha SHARP was Mary Ella GRANT. She was born 29 Oct 1858 at Frog Level, near Selma, in Dallas County, Alabama and died 3 Nov 1928 at Selma, Dallas Co., AL. She married Robert H. Burfitt of Benton, Lowndes County, AL. According to the "Descendents of Richard Gladney" also posted on the internet, Wiley Cleveland GRANT and Martha Eliza SHARP also had a son named William Curtis GRANT who was born 10 November 1855 at Pea Ridge, near Selma, in Dallas County, AL. I do not know the names of additional children belonging to Cleveland GRANT and Martha SHARP. According to this same post, The GRANT and SHARP families were farmers. Martha Eliza SHARP died when William Curtis GRANT was 8 years old at the birth of her 4th child. The GRANT children seem to have been raised primarily by their grandparents, James S. SHARP (b. 30 May 1802) and Rebecca A. or M. BLALOCK (b. 24 Aug 1810). The BLALOCKs were probably from around Pleasant Hill, Dallas County, AL. Wiley Cleveland GRANTs brother was the legal guardian of the children, but he moved to Texas. I am searching for information on JAMES W. GRANT, the father of Wiley Cleveland GRANT. I would also like to know the name and any other info on the brother who moved to Texas. I would also appreciate any information on the families of Samuel SHADRICK or SHADDOCK, James S. SHARP or SHARPE, and Rebecca A. BLALOCK. > > Thanks so much for your help! Any suggestions welcomed. I found in the 1880 US Census the daughter of Lewis M. Hall and Charlott Pace Lee Hobby Hall Hobby. Her name was Sarah Eliza Hall. She married John Calvin Hawkins on Nov. 12, 1877, marriage book B, page 84, bond not co-signed. They had at least the following children: Sallie Pace Hawkins, b. Apr. 5, 1880, d. October 3, 1954 in Covington Co., AL; Calvin Riggs Hawkins, b. Jan. 9, 1882, d. June 24, 1963 in Lowndes Co.; Clifford Eugene Hawkins, b. John W. Hall could be two different people from my records. One is the brother, John, of Lewis Moulton Hall, though no record I have shows his middle initial, if any. The other is probably the one. John W. Hall shows up in the 1850 and 1860 census records. 1850 US Census shows the following: Page 183B, Family 123 John W. Hall, age 23, male, a planter, value real estate $400, born in NC Elizabeth Hall, age 19, female, born in AL John is living next door to Hosea Hall Family 122 Hosea Hall, age 46, male, a carpenter, born in NC Charlotte Hall, age 47, born in NC John Hall, age 21, male, a planter, born in AL Simeon Hall, age 19, male, born in AL Gillis Hall, age 13, male, born in AL Sarah Hall, age 9, female, born in AL Elizabeth Hall, age 18, female, born in AL My guess is that John W. was a nephew of Hosea Hall and not his son. Hosea and John show up in the 1860 US Census: Page 81, Southern Division Family #602 H. G. Hall, age 56, male, born in NC, a mechanic Charlotte Hall, age 57, female, born in NC G. M. Where can I get a copy of Lowndes Courthouse, is it still in print? Does anyone know? AJS
Lewis Moulton Hall was born about 1835 according to the 1860 US Census in Lowndes County. He married Mrs. Charlotte Hobby on May 5, 1859, marriage book 3, page 337, married by E. D. Lavender, JP. The marriage bond was co-signed by E. D. Mopas and it was noted on the license that Charlotte was a widow. Charlotte Pace Lee married William J. Hobby on Dec. 23, 1847, marriage book 2, page 008, by A. M. Simmons, JP. They had one known child, Alice Icedo Hobby, born July 17, 1851. Alice married William Henry Hawkins on March 17, 1872, marriage book A, page 329, married by James Sheehan, MG, bond co-signed by D. S. Sampley. Charlotte married 2nd to Lewis Moulton Hall as described above. Charolotte married 3rd James Crook Hobby on May 30, 1869, marriage book A, page 179, married by Joseph M. Scott, MG, bond co-signed by L. R. Lloyd. They had at least 2 children: Ada Lee Hobby, and Ida Crook Hobby. Charlotte and James are buried in Cross Roads Cemetery as is their daughter Ada Lee and her husband, George Thomas Day. In the 1860 US Census, Lewis M. Hall is found on page 13, Northern Division, family #97. The following is that record abstracted: L. M. Hall, age 25, male, born in AL, a planter C. Hall, age 30, female, born in AL Eliza Hall, age 11/12, female, born in AL Charlotte Hall, age 48, female, born in AL A. C. Hall, age 22, male, born in AL John Hall, age 20, male, born in AL Samuel Hall, age 17, male, born in AL Frank Hall, age 14, male, born in AL Warren Hall, age 8, male, born in AL Adolphus Hall, age 6, male, born in AL Laura Hall, age 2, female, born in AL John Hannah, age 23, male, born in AL. >From this record and the marriage date for Lewis and Charlotte, I have come to the conclusion that Laura is not their daughter. Could be she was born out of wedlock. I have also concluded that Charlotte Hall was the mother to all the Hall children except Eliza. Laura is the question. As to the marriage records - I have been going page by page through these records and have personally recorded all the information I have given you. I feel sure my dates are correct as to the marriage records. What is also interesting is that none of these Hall folks show up in the 1870 US Census for Lowndes County even though Charlotte is living with her new husband, James. Even Eliza, who would be about 11, does not show up. Where are all these Halls? In the Cross Roads cemetery is also buried: Abram C. Hall, died Dec. 19, 1877, no birth date. William Hall, born Jan. 31, 1806, died Apr. 14, 1859 James E. Hall, born Apr. 5, 1846, died Jan. 5, 1852 It could be that William Hall was the husband of Charlotte and father of all those children. He could be the father of Laura who would have already been born when he died. Just a thought. Abram C. could be A. C. and possibly A. Hall of the Alabama 6th. I found the following on one of the sites I've looked at today and believe it to pertain to genealogists everywhere. STRANGERS IN THE BOX Come, look with me inside this drawer, In this box I've often seen, At the pictures, black and white, Faces proud, still, serene. I wish I knew the people, These strangers in the box, Their names and all their memories Are lost among my socks. I wonder what their lives were like, How did they spend their days? What about their special times? I'll never know their ways. If only someone had taken time To tell who, what, where, or when, These faces of my heritage Would come to life again. Could this become the fate Of the pictures we take today? The faces and the memories Someday to be passed away? Make time to save your stories, Seize the opportunity when it knocks, Or someday you and yours could be....... The strangers in the box. Anonymous Author
