    3. Dear Geraldine, Do you have any idea where Joseph "Mine Lick Joe" Allison & Cynthia Stone originated? Or were they both born in TN? There is an ongoing Allison/Ellison Y chromosome DNA Project that has over 90 members as of today, Sept. 3, 2006. Y-Chromosome DNA is passed from father to son down through the generations just as surnames are passed from father to son. Only men inherit the Y-chromosome, therefore only men with the Allison or Ellison surnames (or variant spellings) can be participants in the Allison/Ellison Y-chromosome DNA Family Reconstruction Project. In other words, the Y-Chromosome DNA samples can only be provided by males who HAVE the ALLISON / ELLISON Surnames or similar spellings. Our Allison/Ellison DNA Project Results webpage is online. The URL is: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~allisonellisondna/index.htm You can find the paternal ancestry charts of the particpants there. You will see that there are currently 12 distinctly different Allison and Ellison family lines, each of which has two or more participants. There is also an UNGROUPED category of participants who are waiting for another member of their line to join the DNA Project and match their DNA score. You may want to look at the pedigree charts and see if any of them look like they match names, dates and places if residences of your Allison line. Do you know of any living male descendants of your Allison line who HAVE the ALLISON surname? He could be a very distant ALLISON cousin. If you do, please consider contacting him and telling him about the Allison/Ellison Y chromosome DNA Project. The method of obtaining the DNA cells is simple and painless and doesn't involve any drawing of blood . The type of DNA that is analyzed for genealogical purposes doesn't provide any data about medical conditions. The DNA testing company sends a small tube with Q-tip-like swabs to each participant. All that needs to be done is to swab the inside of the cheek to collect some cells, replace the swabs in the tube and mail it back to the company . In about 9 weeks the company informs the participants about the results and lets them know if their score matches anyone else in the DNA database. The link below can be used by an Allison or Ellison male who might wish to submit his name, mailing address,e-mail address, etc. to order a DNA sample kit to be mailed to him and join the Allison/Ellison DNA Project. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=H99693 Y-chromosome DNA testing is enhancing traditional genealogical research. DNA testing is NOT intended to be a "stand-alone method" of learning about your ancestry. However, it can be of great assistance in furthering your traditional research, especially when your DNA marker scores match the marker scores of another man who shares your surname. It may give you the clue you've been searching for to narrow down the place of origin of your early ancestors. The Allison/Ellison DNA Project has been formed to further genealogical research through the use of DNA analysis. If you know an Ellison male relative who would consider participating, please contact me for additional information about how to join the project, etc. All ALLISON and ELLISON males are invited to join. I will be glad to provide additional information about the DNA Project, if you cantact me privately. I look forward to hearing from you.
