On admission he is described as 32 years old, married and a flesher [=butcher]. His bodily condition was 'reduced' [=skinny] and he was diagnosed as suffering from acute melancholia [=depression]. William was a private patient and 11 shillings per month was paid by his family for his upkeep at Gartnavel. The surety [=guarantor] for the making of these payments was James Muir of 415 Gallowgate, Glasgow. There are case notes on William. These have been photocopied and will be posted to you. The notes show that he killed a fellow patient by beating him on the head. William was removed on 3 July 1876 to stand trial in the High Court in Edinburgh.
