This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Allison, Ellison Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hZ.2ADIB/1151.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Nancy, I am very interested in Daniel Allison because he was born in NY and some of his children were born in Gallia Co., OH. You may be interested in the ancestry chart of one of the participants in the ongoing Allison DNA project (ID 3182) on the Allison DNA Project Results webpage: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~allisonellisondna/index.htm His early Allison ancestors were born in Orange Co., NY, moved to Greenbrier County, WV and then to Gallia Co., OH in about the same time frame as Daniel Ellison lived. My Allison ancestors were also born in Orange Co., NY and migrated to Licking Co., OH in 1841. My brother is ID 2846 in Group B on the DNA Results chart. My brother's DNA matches the DNA score of Allison DNA project participant ID 3182, who is also in Group B. This proves that they share a common Allison ancestor. Do you have a male relative who HAS the ELLISON surname? Is your maiden name ELLISON? The male relative could be your father, an uncle, a brother, a nephew or a male cousin (even a distant one) as long as he HAS the ELLISON surname. His participation in the Allison DNA project will prove whether your line descends from the Allison line that originated in Orange County, NY or if he descends from a different line already represented by the sixty participants who have already ordered DNA test kits, or if your Ellison line has a unique DNA signature that will be different from the current participants. A male ELLISON from your family would be a very welcome new participant! Here's a brief explanation of the the value of joining our DNA project and how a participant can order a DNA sample kit. Y-Chromosome DNA is passed from father to son down through the generations just as surnames are passed from father to son. Only men inherit the Y-chromosome, therefore only men can be participants in a Y-chromosome DNA Family Reconstruction Project. The Y-Chromosome DNA samples for the Allison/Ellison DNA Project can only be provided by males who have the ALLISON / ELLISON surnames. The Family Tree DNA Company (FT-DNA) <http://www.familytreedna.com/> is the company that is analyzing the Y-Chromosome DNA samples to help us find onnections between the various lines of ALLISONs / ELLISONs in England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the northern and southern states of the U.S, and Canada. FTDNA is located in Houston, Texas in the United States, but they can mail their kits to any place in the world. There are now over sixty Allison and Ellison men who are participants in our surname DNA project. The Family Tree DNA Company (FTDNA) is offering at reduced prices three different Y-chromosome DNA paternal ancestry tests to registered family groups like our ALLISON/ELLISON group: (1) the 12 marker test for $99 (US dollars) (2) the 25 Marker test for $169 (US dollars) (3) the 37 Marker test for $219 (US dollars) It is necessary to add $2 shipping cost. The advantage of either the 25 and 37 marker marker tests is that they help to narrow down how recently two male Allisons share a common ancestor. If they would match on all 25 markers, then they have stronger proof that they share an ancestor within a more recent time period (200-300 years ago) and it would be easier to determine where and when their mutual ancestor lived. A close match on 37 markers would confirm that the two men share a recent common ancestor. The method of obtaining the DNA cells is simple and painless and doesn't involve any drawing of blood . The type of DNA that is analyzed for genealogical purposes doesn't provide any data about medical conditions. Family Tree DNA sends a small tube with Q-tip-like swabs to each participant. All that needs to be done is to swab the inside of the cheek to collect some cells, replace the swabs in the tube and mail it back to Family Tree DNA. In about 8 weeks the company informs the participants about the results and lets them know if their score matches anyone else in the Family Tree DNA database. A new participant use the link below to submit his name, mailing address,e-mail address, etc. to order a DNA sample kit to be mailed to him and join the Allison/Ellison DNA Project. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=H99693 Although women don't have Y-chromosome DNA and can't participate in a Y-chromosome DNA project by having their DNA tested, they can participate by asking a male relative to order a DNA sample kit and women can offer to share the cost of the DNA test with the man who is willing to have his DNA tested. I'll be happy to answer your questions. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Mary Allison Yonan yonan@fgi.net
