She was a daughter of William Allison (a solicitor) and Ann ???. She was born in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham. She appears as living in her father's house in the 1851 census but has disappeared in the 1861 census, which could mean that whe emigrated between those years. Do you know when your Elizabeth Allison entered the USA? Was it between these dates? Do you have any other scraps of information about her? Where did you find her date of birth?

Obtaining death certificates for Matthew's children is a good idea. Also for Alexander's children if I can find them. Unfortunately, I have not been able to travel to Washington County, Ohio to check deed records for the Allisons. I hope to some day or perhaps I might be able to hire someone to check them for me. There was a family of Allisons living in Adams Township in Washington County, Ohio, but have never been able to connect Margaret, Alexander, or Matthew to them. Thank you for your helpful ideas. Best Regards.

The History of the Alison or Allison Family in Europe and America A.D. 1135 to 1893 By Leonard Allison Morrison pub. 1893. (A few years ago it was either reprinted or put onto microfilm.) This book is very helpful and might provide some clues. You might try to get copies of death certificates for some of Matthew's children. One of them might contain the correct information. [In my own family, Rachel, the daughter of the deceased, provided the information for her mom's death certificate. Rachel gave the wrong name for her maternal grandmother, who was the mother of the Rachel's mom. Death certificates for Rachel's maternal aunts and uncles had the correct name for their mother, who was Rachel's grandmother.] [In another situation, my ancestor's brother's death certificate had the exact location in MASS for the birthplace for their mother.] If that fails, you might try to get a death certificate for one of ! Alexander's children. Since the "boys" were still pretty young in 1819, I'm assuming that you've already checked deeds for Margaret and her husband. Sometimes when a person first purchased land in a place, the deed will say "late of ____ County" to show where he moved from. You have probably already looked at the county histories for that time period. Often a biography of a relative will contain information about your ancestor. An every name index is such a blessing! Hope this will help a bit. Kathleen (STANFIELD) COOK

Surnames: Allison Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hZ.2ADIB/1780 Message Board Post: For years I have been searching for my Allison roots in Pennsylvania. All I knew was that Matthew Allison and Alexander Allison of Allen County, Ohio, were in Washington County, Ohio (Union Township) in 1819 with a Margaret Allison (probably their mother)and prior to that were in Pennsylvania. They were both born in Pennsylvania (Alexander in 1785 and Matthew in 1800). A few days ago someone posted a file to the US Genweb Archives which was an obituary of MATTHEW ALLISON taken from the Allen County Democrat, dated 26 Aug 1880. It reads as follows: MATTHEW ALLISON was born on the 25th day of August, 1800, in BELMONT COUNTY, PENN. On first coming to Ohio he settled in Fairfield County. In 1827 he came to that part of Ohio which is now in Bath Township, Allen County, and settled on the farm on which he has ever since resided. In 1837, just forty-three years ago last April, he was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Thompson, a sister of Adam Thompson of this county. Mrs. Allison, although well up in years, is as cheerful and sprightly as a girl. They have had born to them twelve children, eight of whom are still living, as follows: William, who is unmarried, residing in Cloud County, Kansas; james, jacob, Andrew, and John, all married and reside in Allen County; Nancy Jane the youngest, is unmarried and lives with her parents; Margaret, intermarried with William Meeks of Perry Township and Rebecca intermarried with Geo. Tafflinger, who resides on the County Infirmary farm. Mr. Allison has always been an industr! ious, quiet man, with an ear ever open to the cry of distress and a hand ever ready to afford relief. We need not say that all who know Mr. and Mrs. Allison love and respect them." Now, my problem is - THERE IS NO BELMONT COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA!!!! As far as I can ascertain, there never was a Belmont County, PA. Does anyone have any idea what this could mean? I believe there are several Belmont towns/cities/districts in Pennsylvania. I also know there is a Belmont County, Ohio near to Washington County, Ohio, but all records for these two men indicate that they were born in Pennsylvania, not Ohio. Can anyone help? I can't believe that I finally get a break and then get stumped again!!!
