Posted on: Limestone County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Limestone/10601 Surname: LAWRENCE, WALLACE ------------------------- For some 15 years we've been searching for the ancestry of James Arthur Lawrence (JAL) b. 25 Aug 1865 TN, d. 2 Feb 1918 Inez, TX, m. Ruth Wallace b. 1869 TN. They married in San Marcos, Hays County, TX in 1893. They owned property near Henly, TX contemporary with other Lawrences, including Henry Overton Lawrence, son of Matterson Lawrence, a doctor, both buried in Henly, Hays County, TX. Matterson Lawrence appears as Madison Laurence in the 1850 census in Monroe County, WV and as Madison Lawrence in 1860 census in Lavaca County, TX. No relation established to JAL. Family tradition says JAL was raised near where TN, MS and AL "corner out" in the towns of Shanghai, AL (near Hickory Hills in Limestone County) and Ikua, MS in Tishomingo County. His mother's name was Molly Agnes. His father may have been named James Arthur also, or John. His father was one of five brothers who fought in the Civil War. Three were killed. His father died nine years after the War was over. JAL had siblings or aunts and uncles named Lella, John, and twins Hubert and Herbert. They moved together to the Choctaw Nation, perhaps near Ada, OK. Some family disagreement, perhaps involving a woman, caused part of the group to move to Texas. Which ones moved and their relation is not known. We first see JAL at the time of his marriage to Ruth Wallace in Hays County in 1893. On the 1900 census he gave his birthplace as TN, father NC, mother AL.
