His parents are believed to be James Bennett Wray and Mary Elizabeth Gordon, who moved from Tennessee to North Alabama. They were residents of Limestone County in 1850. However, after James Bennett Wray's death, Elizabeth, along with her children, moved to Morgan County, Alabama to be near other relatives.
