My maiden name is Carriger. My grandfather, Wesley C. Carriger, was born in Tennessee I believe around 1880, lived near Kerrville, Texas long enough to marry my grandmother, then lived in the Coachella Valley in California. I know little more about his family, as I believe his father died when he was young and his mother remarried a Reverend Waterhouse. I think he had a brother named Charles Wesley. My mother thinks the Carrigers owned a railroad in Tennessee, and I suspect they may have been slave owners because I have run into several African-American Carrigers. I would like to know where the surname Carriger originated. My father told me it was a corruption of a German word meaning Coach maker, and that his family believed they were descendants of Hessian mercenaries who fought for England during the Revolutionary War, then remained in this country, possibly after changing allegiances.
