    1. [ALLIMEST] Slaughters of Limestone, 1810-1850
    2. About 1809, John SLAUGHTER moved his family from Knox County, KY to Madison Co., Miss. Territory. He died in 1812 and left a will that named his wife Sarah and his children William, James, John, Samuel; Phebe, Polly, Nancy and Betsey. When AL became a state, we find son James as the first sheriff of Limestone County. I am told that son John was shot in fight involving the two James ATKINSONs and James SCOTT. Was young John SLAUGHTER killed? Or did he die later? John SLAUGHTER's son William is not as easy to follow. Was he William A. SLAUGHTER, a Justice of the Peace? Was his wife Ann, who was a widow in 1850, with several young children? Was Ann William's second wife? Who was his first? Was she a COLLIER? Daughter Betsey married John JONES in 1816. Who was John JONES and where did this couple live? I cannot find them in Limestone County or Madison. Did they have a son named William M. JONES, b. 1819 in Decatur? Andrew Jackson JONES, b. 1828? Thanks for ANY info!!! J Brown [email protected]

    1. [ALLIMEST] LISTOWNER: Subject lines & posting messages
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, Perhaps I didn't make my self clear in my last message. I specifically posted the rules for the Surname Exchange. Apparently a lot of you didn't read it. So, here it is again. Please read it carefully before posting again. 1) You must put your SURNAMES IN THE SUBJECT LINE. (Not the word "surnames" but the actual surnames you are writing about). Do not use "roll call", "surnames", "exchange" or some other useless phrase. 2) No more than 3 surnames per message, however you can send as many messages as you like. 3) Remember this list is set to "reply to sender" and not "reply to list", so you can't post messages to the list just by hitting reply. You will need to use the list address which appears at the very bottom of each message posted to the list. Also, I encourage all the computer newbies to please learn the basics of your e-mail program before posting messages. Mistakes like the ones that filled my Inbox could have been avoided if you would just take the time to learn about your e-mail program. Also please read my "Listowner" messages carefully before posting. I try to word them in plain English and without a lot of techno babble. If you don't understand what I have posted then ask me. I don't mean to sound rude or snide, but it gets rather frustrating when I spend most of my online time using the delete key and sending reminder. For those of you who need help using your e-mail program, web browser, or computers/internet in general--RootsWeb has lists for these. If you would like the addresses and instructions, e-mail me privately and I will send you the info. Sincerely, Kim Ivey <[email protected]> Listowner

    1. [ALLIMEST] LISTOWNER: Exchange time (please read this first)
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, Ok.....let the Surname Exchange begin! Between now and Sunday, June 11 everyone is invited to post their surname queries. Before you send your messages please read the following: 1) You must put your SURNAMES IN THE SUBJECT LINE. (Not the word "surnames" but the actual names) 2) No more than 3 surnames per message, however you can send as many messages as you like. 3) Remember this list is set to "reply to sender". This means that when you hit the reply button your message will be sent to the sender of message you are replying to and not to the list. So, you will have to put the list address in the "To" field. 4) You may use any query format you like, whether it be just a list of names, names with dates, outlines copied from your genealogy program, or a formal query. Also, keep in mind that this exchange period may drastically increase list activity. If you have limited e-mail space, your mailbox could fill up quickly, and that can cause messages to bounce. After 3 bounces the system will automatically unsub you, however you can always subscribe again. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please contact me privately. Ok...enough of my chatter. Let's get busy and find our elusive ancestors! Have fun and happy hunting! Sincerely, Kim Ivey <[email protected]> Listowner

    1. LISTOWNER: Subject lines
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, When you post messages to the list please put something meaningful such as names/dates/places or be specific in what you are asking. Examples of good subject lines are "JOHNSON, 1850-1900, Jackson Co., AL" or "Where is the Smith Cemetery located". So, please take the time to prepare a good subject line names/dates/places or specific question). After all, the subject line is the first thing people notice, and having a good concise one greatly increases the chances of your message being read and your chances of finding a connection. I don't mean to be picky, I just want this list to be productive for all listmembers. Sincerely, Kim Ivey <[email protected]> Listowner

    1. LISTOWNER: Next Week is Surname Exchange
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, I declare the week of June 4-11 as Surname Exchange Week. Everyone is invited to post their surnames and give a little info about them. Here are the rules: 1) You must put the surnames in the subject line. Then in the body tells us what you are searching for. 2) Don't post more than 3 surnames per message, but you can post as many messages as you like. Also, you will need to use the list address to send new messages to the list address. This list is now set to "reply to sender" so you can't use the reply button in order to get your message on the list. I have set it up where the list address will be displayed at the bottom of each message posted to the list. Please keep in mind that a Surname Exchange can drastically increase list activity and result in several messages per day. This can create a problem if you have limited e-mail space or don't have time to sort through the messages. So, please consider this an advanced notice. I will send another message on Sunday, June 4 to officially start the exchange. Good luck to everyone! Sincerely, Kim Ivey mailto:[email protected] Listowner
