"Sanford, son of Dozier Thornton, was born in Elbert Co, GA in 1798 and moved to Chambers Co, AL by 1836 and later to Macon Co., Alabama." 1840 Chambers Co, AL census, page 179. THORNTON, Sanford "By 1850, Sanford was in Macon Co, AL. [Prior to 1866, Auburn was in Macon County.] Sanford Thornton owned 321.220 Acres [T20N R26E, S28] of land. As seen on the present day Lee County transportation map, the property is at the edge of North Auburn and 2 miles S. of the Chambers Co. line. This close proximity of T20N R26E, S28 to Chambers Co. ties in with Walter W. Thornton research information: "Moved to Chambers Co, AL by 1836, as Sanford enlisted for service in the Florida Indian Wars, June 2, at White Plains, Chambers Co, AL. Land grant for this service is of record." On June 5, 1851, Sanford joined the Auburn Masonic Lodge No. 76. He attended Lodge meetings on: July 22, 1852, December 18, 1852, December 27, 1852, February 17, 1853. On March 4, 1853,he died.... and on March 6, 1853, "was buried with appropriate honors by his lodge." Notice of his death, and a copy of his lodge's "Tribute of Respect and Resolutions" appeared on March 25, 1853 in the Southwestern Baptist, published then in Montgomery, Alabama.", page 3, Col. 3. The big mystery to me is how Sanford could have been buried by his Auburn lodge and yet there appears to be no record of him in the Auburn cemetery -- I would very much like to know where he is buried. UNIVERSAL MASONIC DIRECTORY. ALABAMA 1859, Pages 5 -10 NO. LODGE- LOCATION- TIME OF MEETING 76 Auburn Auburn, Macon Co*. 1st and 3d Thursdays Note: Lee County was established by the State Legislature on December 5, 1866, out of parts of Macon*, Tallapoosa, Chambers*, and Russell counties. "Sanford's wife, Susannah McMaster Thornton, died about 1856 in the Union Springs, AL area." There is no record of her burial place either. Reference: "Thorntons Through the Centuries" by Walter W. Eugenia, The current Auburn lodge has a website and contact information. You can search for 'Twin Cities Lodge # 76 Auburn, Alabama' to find the website. They may have an archivist or know of someone in the area who could help. Another option is to contact the Auburn University library and ask if they have any information on lodge members. If they do have something for you, come back to the mailing list with where in the library to look.
