    1. [ALLCHIN] New link Allchin - Orchin Surnames?
    2. Stephen Jones
    3. I haven't posted to the Allchin list for while, but I need to check a new link that I have found between the AL(L)CHIN surname and the spelling variation ORCHIN. My evidence is very circumstantial, so I'd like to find out if anyone else has ALCHIN ancestors in the Oxford street area of London. Here is the story so far.... My Henry ORCHIN was married to Elizabeth SMITH on 19March1810 at St George Hanover Square, London I was delighted to find a baptism for Henry ALCHIN on 24May1789 at St Geo Hanover Sq. This could be my Henry ORCHIN - he would have been nearly 21 on the day of his marriage. The baptism details are: Henry son of Henry and Mary ALCHIN bap 24May1789 at St Geo Hanover Square. (born 22 May) There is also a baptism there of Jane ALLCHIN 5Jan1794 I'd appreciate any opinions on whether this ALCHIN baptism is my Henry ORCHIN, and I'd certainly like to know if anyone else is researching ALCHIN families in this area. Replies to the list please Steve -- Stephen Jones -- steve@dorsetcoast.fsnet.co.uk

    1. [ALLCHIN] Richard ALLCHIN born 1866, Kent, UK
    2. A Burnish
    3. Hello all, I've done a very silly thing, but it might benefit someone else, so all is not lost. I was waiting for the birth certificate of my partner's gt grandfather Richard ALLCHIN to arrive before I posted my first message to the list. *After* I had ordered the certificate, I looked again at the ALLCHIN references that I had copied from the GRO birth index and discovered that I had noted two Richard ALLCHIN births in two consecutive quarters in 1866. I had forgotten about the second one, and ordered the one registered in Mar qtr without specifing father's name or any other checking points. The phrases "silly me" and "brain dead" spring to mind. Kept my fingers crossed that I'd hit upon the correct one - but in vain. It arrived today, and is definitely the wrong Richard. I've got the birth certificate for the Richard who appears in the following 1881 census entry: Dwelling: Hamhill Census Place: Birling, Kent, England Source: FHL Film 1341213 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 0898 Folio 81 Page 24 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Richard ALLCHIN M 57 M Birling, Kent, England Rel: Head Occ: Laborer Mary ALLCHIN M 51 F Ightham, Kent, England Rel: Wife Occ: Laborer Wife Robert ALLCHIN U 20 M Birling, Kent, England Rel: Son Occ: Laborer Richard ALLCHIN 15 M Birling, Kent, England Rel: Son Occ: Ag Lab John ALLCHIN 12 M Birling, Kent, England Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Arthur W. ALLCHIN 8 M Birling, Kent, England Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Anyone want him? Going cheap to good home. I'll order the correct (hopefully) certificate in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, the Richard I am interested in is part of the following family: Dwelling: The Rocks Census Place: East Malling, Kent, England Source: FHL Film 1341214 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 0899 Folio 53 Page 12 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Stephen ALLCHIN M 49 M West Malling, Kent, England Rel: Head Occ: Bricklayer Sussannah ALLCHIN M 45 F Wateringbury, Kent, England Rel: Wife William ALLCHIN U 17 M Et Malling, Kent, England Rel: Son Occ: Lab In Brickfield Richard ALLCHIN 15 M Et Malling, Kent, England Rel: Son Occ: Lab In Paper Mill Lewis T. 1. [ALLCHIN] Allchin spelling variations
    2. Stephen Jones
    3. As a starter, here is a list of Allchin variations that I have noticed so far... >From a surname dictionary... ALLCORN, ALCHORN, ALCHORNE, ALLCHORN, ALLCHORNE ALCHEN, ALCHIN, ALCHIN are listed by Reaney & Wilson* under ALCORN. There is a cross-reference to OLDCORN(E) >From my own research (and that of others) the ORCHIN surname appears to be a variant spelling used by the family of Henry ORCHIN, b c1790 in Middlesex. Is there anyone else with an ALLCHIN-ORCHIN link? Various (soundex) indexes lump the following with ALLCHIN: ALKIN, ALKINS, ALLKIN, ALLKINS ARKIN, ARKEN, ARKON, ARCHIN *A dictionary of English Surnames, PH Reaney & RM Wilson Steve, sweltering in a very sunny, hot Dorset, England -- Stephen Jones -- steve@dorsetcoast.fsnet.co.uk -- www.melcombe.freeserve.co.uk

    1. [ALLCHIN] Allchin List
    2. Stephen Jones
    3. Welcome to the Allchin list! The Allchin list is getting off to a slow start but the surname isn't very common, so the list is never going to be busy. There is a concentration of Allchin in Kent, with good numbers in Surrey and Middlesex. The surname also occurs in other counties in the South and East of England. I haven't investigated the Allchin "hotspots" overseas. All the Allchin spelling variations are welcome. One aim of this list is to help subscribers identify spelling variations and perhaps prove the links between different branches of the family. Why not send your Allchin interests to the list so that we can see if there is anyway we can help each other. The messages will be archived (hopefully the Archives will be working again soon) so other people may see them too. If you have found Allchin (+ variations) in any source, why not post your findings to this list. This is particularly useful for sources that haven't been indexed. All the best Steve (Allchin and Orchin listowner) -- Stephen Jones, Surrey Listowner -- steve@dorsetcoast.fsnet.co.uk -- www.melcombe.freeserve.co.uk
