>From THE FLORENCE TIMES JOURNAL, August 5, 1874: "At Lexington last Saturday the Barbecue or "meeting", went off all right until evening. Telling speeches were made by MAJ. WITHERSPOON, S. D. HERMAN, CHAS. PATTON and perhaps others. Late in the afternoon, however, some disturbance occurred. CAL THOMAS cut BILL DANLEY about, we know not what, JOHN RICE shot NELSON G. ALLEN and then JAS. McPETERS shot said RICE. We understand this difficulty grew out of some old feud."
