Some of the Diaries of James Robert Bumpass have been transcribed and are now available for purchase. The diaries were transcribed by James Robert Bumpass' great-grandson, Kenneth R. Roaten, of Corinth, Mississippi. It took 2 years and five months to accomplish as some of the Diary pages had to be moved with a finger nail file as they were so brittle plus using a magnifying glass. The 215-page, softbound book contains many surnames from Lauderdale County, Alabama; Tishomingo County, Mississippi; and Alcorn County, Mississippi. Also highlighted from the diaries is information on various churches, schools, geographic locations, anecdotes, photocopies of his original handwriting, and pictures of some of his original diaries. The book includes a family group sheet for James Robert Bumpass and group sheets for each of his 11 children. This item can be purchased from the Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 273, 203 E. Quitman Street, Iuka, MS 38852. Tel.: (662) 423-3500. Price: $35.00, shipping $5.00. Below might answer some questions: James Robert Bumpass was born Jan 02 1854 in Waterloo, Alabama, and died 11 Nov 1936. He and his wife, Cleopatra Whittle Bumpass, are buried at the Union Cemetery in Alcorn County. These transcriptions start with 1890 through May 28, 1928. I started collecting his diaries from different relatives, and while there are probably more, all I have acquired are included in the book. I am positive that there are many more of the Bumpass diaries scattered around with some of his distant Bumpass family relatives. Before my cousin Troy Bumpass passed away, (who donated the land for the Corinth Park) told me that there are more Diaries out there someplace within the families. I still have one of his original diaries and one of his Bibles which were given to me by one of my relatives who let me look through his father's old trunk. I just haven't located any other Diaries yet. I met many Bumpass researchers at the dedication ceremony for Gabriel Bumpass a number of years back in Waterloo, Ala.
