Joel, There were only two Cagles in Hardin County of the age to be soldiers during the Civil War. Henry Overton Cagle, 1842-1898 and Charles Talley Cagle, 1844-1930. Great uncle Henry joined a Confederate Artillery unit and Great grandfather Charley did not join until he was old enough in 1863. He was in the First Confederate Cavalry. In early 1863 most of the First Confederate was captured at the Duck River in Shelbyville Tennessee saving Gen. Joseph Wheeler's behind. The recruiters came back to Hardin county to get new recruits in late 1863. That was when Charley Cagle joined. The Whitlow side of my family, (my mothers name), lived in the same neighborhood. An older great-uncle joined the Confederate Army in late 1861 and was dead by March 1862. His younger older brother joined the Union Army in 1864.
