JEFFERSON DAVIS." Many persons doubtless suppose she has added the name JEFFERSON to her Christian name, VIRGINIA. But this is is not the proper explanation. V. is the abbreviation of veuve, the French for widow, and it is the custom in Louisiana, and perhaps in other parts of the South for widows to place that letter before the Christian names of their deceased husbands. V. JEFFERSON DAVIS simply means the widow of JEFFERSON DAVIS.
