Houston, our Representative in Congress is from the "Illinois State Register" published at Springfield. It should be a source of congratulation? to the ____ of this district to win the high estimation for which our immediate Representative is ____. The following letter, from a gentleman of the highest standing in Washington, throws some light on the late vote in Congress, and does us more than justice to these few patriotic members from Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana, who would not desert their country in the crisis then pending. Honor is their noble names. WASHINGTON CITY, April 25, 1846 ___: The struggle is over, and the notice for the termination of the convention in relation to the north west _____ of America has passed-But how passed? It is my purpose to inform you. It is almost enough to solve the whole matter to say, that the original, true and straight out friends of the measure voted against it in its final form? and the oppo_____ of the measure including the whole Whig party, and the advocates of masterly inactivity, voted for it........ ____Houston of Ala., Cobb of Ga., Reid of N.C. and Harmansos? of La., were exceptions to the general vote of the South. They voted with Democrats of the north and nearly the whole body of Democrats of the west, against the resolution. Like the brave Spartans of the ___ of Thermopy__, they wrote victory on their shields in the moment of their fall--..... Let the West in the sorrow of defeat and loneliness of desertion, remember them to honor and gratitude. For such men the brave and disinterested Democracy of the West would peril their hearth-stones and their heads, to rescue the whole South from the terrible and bloody wrath re____ced by abolition fanaticism. Sir, you think the noble example of these patriots merit this notice, you will please publish it and oblige Your obedient servant,
