I am trying to learn what happened to relatives of mine who were living in Lauderdale Co., AL, in 1910. The census listing shows: Henry C. McGee 32 Isabel 24 Mark 5 Kathleen 3 A family history written in the 1920s states that Henry C. McGee married 25 Nov., 1903, Pratt City, AL, Isabella Hazel Bickerton. Is Pratt City in Lauderdale County? The same family history says Henry and Isabella had only two children, Mark Arthur McGee and Catherine Ann McGee. Our family has a complete blank about this family. Henry C. McGee still has nieces and nephews alive in their 80s who never remember seeing or hearing about him or his family, and never remember having heard of Mark or Catherine. I cannot find any of these people in the Social Security Death INdex, either. Is there a printed Lauderdale County cemetery book? If so, is there anyone who could check for McGee? This is really a puzzle. I do not know if the whole family died, moved away, or just lost touch with their other relatives. Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, Danny Knight.
It seems like every three or four months a story like this seems to show up. It is no question that the mother of this child (the child is almost 18 years now) is very distressed over this situation. She has my sympathy over what has happened and what is going on now. However, I am only hearing her side of the story and I can not pass judgement on the laws or courts that allowed this situation to become what it is today. It is my firm belief that these type of topics should not be part of this forum. This is not a "Dear Abby" column and I would appreciate all of our correspondence be related to genealogy....to be enjoyed by all and benefical to everyone who participates. If this message came to me I would do look-up like newspaper graduation pictures etc and I would mail or scan it to her as I would any request I get. Newspaper articles and pictures in them seem to me to be public domain. I never question a legality on a look-up. Fact is someone could mail the whole newspaper to her therefore not choosing just the son's portion . She could also call the newspaper office and buy a newspaper to be sent to her without any personal explanation at all . I think this is all that can be done unless a person aquainted with her could respond at their choice and relate news. Maybe someone who knew her when she lived there could respond with news. I was a child of this kind and I certainly could have benifited by casual info from someone.. Coral Babb ______________________________ --------------------

Just posting this as information in case anyone has a need for good and inexpensive Alabama state and county maps of various sizes. Check the web site: http://www.dot.state.al.us/Bureau/Equipment/maps.HTM They offer the same maps as Anna mentioned but in case you can't travel to a particular county they are all available here. Orders are usually processed in about 7 - 10 days and sometimes less. The site has a downloadable order form which you can then use for your orders and their phone number is listed also along with a mailing address. Happy hunting. Earl ldoehj@gte.net

I'm new to the list and a search of the archives didn't show anything about my query. Copies I have from the book/article "The Shoal Creek Baptist Association and her Alabama Churches" by Richard C. Sheridan states that my gggrandfather Jabez Beard was born May 17, 1790, in Bedford Co., VA, and died October 7, 1854. He is buried in the Beard Cemetery located about 3 miles northeast of Cloverdale. I have found Cloverdale on a mapping service and would like to know if the Beard Cemetery is still there. Milton, I have a Highway map of Lauderdale County (1997) that I purchased from the County Commissioner's office at the Courthouse for $3.00. It shows all features-cemeteries, churches, water(various forms), etc. I looked all over the area around Cloverdale, found several cemeteries but not all of them named.I didn't find one named Beard Cemetery. It may be one of the ones I saw but I'm not sure. If you could pinpoint the location a little more in detail maybe I could find it for you. BTW, I think these maps are great !!-the large one (version I have) covers two sheets approximately 36" x 36". There is also a smaller version for about $2.00-I'm not sure how much smaller it is. Let me know if I can help! Anna, IBSSG alangley@hiwaay.net
