Searching for information on John Marrs, died 1835 in Lauderdale County. Have never been able to find information on his parents, birth or even burial site. Have been able to trace several of his children who married in Lauderdale County on dates ranging from the 1820's to 1840's. Only know that his wifes first name waas Nancy. She died in 1860's. He named his sons Joseph Carrel Marrs and Albert Pryor Marrs and had a granson named Fletcher Srygley Marrs. Assume these names were of people either related such as grandfathers or in the case of Fletcher of a person admired by family [this could apply to the other names]. Fletcher was an evangelist educated at Marrs Hill. Any help even a guess would be appreciated. Bill
1850 Lauderdale Co., AL. Census Catherine King-44-NC William A. King-22-NC Arnold-20-NC (John J. Arnold King) Stephen-18-AL. Emeline-15-AL. Joseph-14-AL. George-11-AL. Luke-7-AL. Possible son-Alexander King-24-NC with his wife Lydia McDonald-18 who was living next door to Catherine in 1850. Possible daughter Caroline King who married James D. Scaggs. Catherine's maiden name is unknown, nor is her husband's name known. Not proven, but the James M. King in the 1840 Lauderdale Co., AL. census could have been her husband. This assumption is based upon the ages and number of children in his household in 1840 and those in Catherine's in 1850. After 1853, I have no other record of Catherine. I don't know whether she died at this time or left for other parts, possibly with one of her children. William A. King stayed in Lauderdale Co. and died during the Civil War. Arnold King lived in Lauderdale Co., AL., Lawrence Co., TN., and is buried in Emeline Stutts Cem.in Lauderdale Co. Stephen King migrated to Fayette co., TN., then on to Prairie Co., AR. Emeline most likely stayed and died in Lauderdale Co., AL. Joseph King-have no further info on him. George King migrated to Monroe and Prairie Co.'s in AR. Luke stayed in TN. migrating to Lawrence Co., then to Perry Co., and Hickman Co., buried in Lewis Co. Alexander King-after 1850-no further info. Caroline King-after 1850-no further info. Greetings listers. Lets take the next few days and really post our surnames here for Lauderdale County Alabama. After the passing of my Mother, Olive Faye (Slaton) McCarley last Sunday July 30, 2000 I need a little cheering up and thought a good Roll Call would help take my mind off things. One of the hardest dates I entered yet. Just a few rules though, Please post your Surnames in the SUBJECT LINE, and give as many dates as you can. My mother died at the age of 87 and even though she had a good, relatively long life, letting go is still hard to do. I can relate to your "hardest to enter dates." Thankfully, it does get easier as the days go by. My Greatgrandfather Jerome "Joe" Jackson and my Greatgrandmother, Sarah Josephine Evans Bell Jackson are suppposedly buried in Lauderdale County. Have no idea where. I have the "Cemeteries Of East Lauderdale County, AL" published in 1996 and they are not to be found in it. My Watson relatives are buried in "Warmack" Cemetery, but if anyone has any knowledge of Jerome Jackson and Sarah Josephine Evans Bell Jackson burial site, please contact me. Thought you might be the one that could give it to me and others if they were in need of it. I am interested in knowing how or if it can be done, to obtain records of land, property that might have been sold. I have proof of the sale to my grandfather (if it is the right person) My ggrandfather(I believe it is mine family) bought acreage from a family in Lauderdale Co., Ala. I am trying to find out for sure if indeed this is my family. So thought I would try another avenue and see if or when maybe my ggrandfather might have sold it when he went into Hardin Co., TN. to marry and then onto Ark. My ggrandfather was: Andrew Jackson Futrell and he bought the land from a A.(H.or W) McMurry(McMuray) and Mary D. McMurry(McMurayY), Oct. 10, 1887. Deed Bk, A-20 P. 331. I hope this is not confusing but would appreciate your input. Trecia(Hitchcock)Griffin
A few days ago we had problems with our Internet connection, and some of our files were lost. These included some messages I had received requesting lookups on the 1870 Lauderdale County census. If you have written me requesting lookups and have not received an answer, please contact me again, and I will try to send you the information as soon as possible. Jeannine Keenum
Good Morning Nancy, No, SHELTON is not one of my lines. As a matter of fact I do not have even one direct ancestor in the entire state of AL, so I've 'adopted' the families of Lauderdale County. <gbg> 1850 Census, Lauderdale Co AL, p. 277 B, line 8 District No. 1, 2 Dec 1850. hh # 657/673 Wm. HOPSON 37 m boatman TN plus family Raft. SHELTON 22 M do TN [Garrett shows this as Rabt. Shelton with the 'a' underlined. It appears that he is 'rooming' with the Hopson family. Note that he does not own land.] line 39, same page. hh # 662/678 T. J. OWEN 38 m farmer 500 SC George 30 m asst SC FANNY 22 f TN Do you think these might be the same people that are listed as follows in Warren's 1860 Lauderdale? If so, they are still living in the Waterloo area in both census records. p. 128, hh # 518 SHELTON, Rafe 32 m hireling TN ", Frances 22 f TN ", Jane 8 f AL ", William 5 m AL ", Samuel 1 m AL IF this is the family listed below, then the marriage may have occurred after 2 Dec 1850 [date census was taken] because neither Rafe nor Frances are marked as being married within the year. And, it doesn't appear to have taken place in Lauderdale County. None of this family is listed in Warren's 1870 Census, and I did not find a marriage for Frances SHELTON between 1862-1870 here in Lauderdale. Although listed as a boatman in 1850 [probably on the TN River], the 1860 occupation of 'hireling' indicates to me that he was a 'general laborer'. With a child named David Jefferson [could be for Jefferson Davis???] I'd look for service in the Civil War. Ralph Shelton is definitely of age to be cannon fodder. Hope this helps. The Wayne County Historical Society, Wayne County, Tennessee, is entering into a project of collecting as many Bible records as we can to be published and available for purchase. Any family who has lived in Wayne County, Tennessee, or who presently lives in Wayne County, Tennessee is encouraged to share their Family Bible Records with the Historical Society. This can be done by taking the Bible to any office of the Peoples Bank, Wayne County Bank, or Bank of Waynesboro to have copies made at no charge. You may also take them to the Office of the County Historian in the Courthouse or most churches to have copies made of the Brith, Death, Marriage and Publisher's pages of the Bible. We especially need the "Publisher's Page" or the "Title Page", showing the name of the publisher and/or the date of publication. If the Title or Publisher's page is missing, a copy of the New Testament page will usually work. Copies may be mailed to the Wayne County Historical Society, P.O. Box 866, Waynesboro, TN 38485-0866, may be brought to the office of the County Historian in the Courthouse, or emailed to Mrs. Betty Anderson at <andcoy@netease.net>; Bob Rains at <rainsb@netease.net>. If emailed, please review the format for transcription by checking those records which are on-line at http://www.netease.net/wayne/originalbible.htm, or you may submit a scanned copy of the record. As you know old Bible may get lost as the years go on -- or even burned -- with no copies available for our children and grandchildren. Many times these Bible records are the only verification of family records. You participation will help us preserve the history of Wayne County (Tennessee) families for years to come. By submitting your Bible Records, you are giving permission for those records to be publsihed in the Wayne County Bible Records Book.
