    1. [ALLAUDER] Roll Call Rayburn, Minton, McLane
    2. M. Rayburn
    3. Hello Fellow Rayburn researchers! I have not posted in a while so here goes. This is the story of my Rayburns from Lauderdale Co., Al. and Wayne Co., TN. If you see anything that looks familiar, feel free to write. My Great Grandfather was Samuel Mack Rayburn (b. 6/23/1857). I have found him in the 1880 Alabama census living in Lauderdale county. This same census has Howell Jackson Rayburn and Savilla (Hargett), his parents living close by. I did obtain Samuel Mack's marriage license to Sarah L. Minton. They were married in Lauderdale County on Jan. 7, 1880 at Sarah's fathers' house ("Mr. Minton"). The minister was A.W. Gilbert. Witnessing the wedding was a J.W. McLane. A Howard McLane was listed on the 1880 census as a nephew, living with Howell and Savilla Rayburn. Samuel Mack Rayburn and wife Sarah had three children. William J., James Edward and Sally W. After the birth of my great uncle William J. Rayburn in 1883, Samuel M. and Sarah moved to Wayne County, TN. There my grandfather, James Edward (1886) and his sister Sally W. (1889) were born. They all show up on the 1900 census in the 4th beat of Wayne, Co. The spelling of Sam is real bad. It came out Rayburn, On Aik (On = Sam and Aik = Mack) I must presume that the family member giving the information had a very bad lisp or the census taker very bad hearing. In 1910 S. M. Rayburn shows again with wife Sally (Sarah) along with my grandfather James E. who by then married Nancy Kelley. 1920 census again shows Rayborn Mach S. and wife Sallie L. Also Rayburn Ed (James E.) along with wife Nancy and six of my aunts. Sometime around 1928/9 Nancy passed away and James married Mable Logan, my grandmother. They then moved back to Florence, AL. There my father and his brothers and sisters were born. Samuel Mack and Sarah moved back to AL with them. My father recalls Sam passing abt. 1931 and Sarah abt. 1940. If you have any information about Samuel Mack or Howell Jackson Rayburn please contact me. m.rayburn@home.com

    3. First let me say how sorry I am for you loss Troy. I lost my own mother in Sept 1997. Even though she never did genealogy work herself she was always happy to baby-sit in order for me to research her family and loved to see what I had found out when I got home. She and I searched many graveyards in both Limestone and Lauderdale Counties together. I miss her terribly. As long as their memory is still in our hearts they will be with us forever. I am trying to find information on the family of Mark Wilson Smith. He was married to sisters first Rachael Malinda Eastep dates unknown. He had two children by her, Jesse Franklin Smith 1861-1924 m. Mary Susan Ragsdale and Samuel Houston Smith 1862-?. He had two children with his second wife Martha A. Eastep dates unknown, Addison Kirby Smith m. Vera ?, and Thomas B. Smith m. Emma S. ? I am a descendent of Jesse Franklin Smith. I know that Thomas B. is buried in Hurricane Cemetery along with a couple of other infants. I have no idea where Mark or either wife is buried. Would love to find descendents of Thomas B. and Addison K. Samuel H. never married. Both of Mark's marriages took place in Lauderdale Co. Jesse Franklin lived in the western part of Limestone County in the Coxey community until his death. His descendents live in Limestone Co. Any help would be appreciated.

    3. Hi Trecia, The deed you have should have a land description - giving acreage, section, township, and range. If he was single at the time, he may have just walked off and left it. If this were the case, there would eventually be a sale of the land for taxes - usually done by the sheriff. These 'Sheriff's Sale' were advertised in the Florence Times, and although they don't always, they sometime give the name of the former owner. If the acreage is large enough, it may not still be 'together' today, but if it were, another way to find out when/how it was sold is to do an abstract. It's also possible that the deed is in the 'unrecorded' files in the Probate Judges office. These MUST be gone thru BY HAND. They are filed by the letter of the last name of ONE of the people involved. If you got lucky, it might be filed under "F" for Futrell - if not, you would have to go thru all the drawers, so plan on spending some time looking if this is the case. It's also possible that the deed is filed in Hardin Co TN. Especially if he sold to someone that lived in Hardin County. It would then be up to the buyer to file the deed. As a matter of fact, that is true if he sold it to someone in Lauderdale. As long as the taxes are paid, the county probably wouldn't put up a fuss. Of course if he sold it 'on time' and carried the note himself, the deed would not be recorded until after the land was paid for. In this case, you should check the DIRECT INDEX TO RECORDS [deeds] for the years following the date of purchase. Some people are notoriously LATE in filing deeds. There's a deed from the Cypress Land Company that wasn't filed until about 1911! Almost 100 years after it was executed. It had been in the same family all that time, so no one bothered to record it until none of the heirs wanted it! I hope this helps. If anyone else has any other ideas, feel free to chime in here. I only request that you also post to the Lauderdale list.
