Here is a message that came to me a few days ago from another of my Rootsweb lists. It may help in finding the area in which Highland, AL was located. <<The USGS GNIS offers a search engine that looks up place and feature names. It is extremely handy for locating those communities and places that no longer exist or go by a different name. I have found every "lost" place I have searched thus far. http://geonames.usgs.gov >> Nadine Smith Researching: Ball, Bunch, Burton, Calber / Calder, Darling, Dunn, Fowler, Gibson, Grubbs, Hackney, Hartgrove, Henson, Herring, Hill, Key, Luke, Maples, Martin, McPhearson / McFerson, Pannell, Parnell, Power(s), Ro(d)gers, Smith, Styles, Toliver, Yewell
Thanks to all of you that wrote trying to help me with my question of where was HIGHLAND, ALABAMA . I got answers that it was several different places. I am almost sure that those that told me, that it was near Wright, Alabama in Lauderdale County, have the one that I am looking for, since the HOWELL family seems to have been in that area. I had never heard that it was once called Highland. Anyone that has any information on the family of Phillip Howell and wife Mary (Polly) Wesson, please write. I need your help. Thanks. My line comes from Jonathon RIchardson married to Elizabeth Anna Forsythe. His father was also Jonathon, married to Nancy. Here stands the wall. A "cousin" gave me this information and we are both busy trying to prove where they came from. The father, Jonathon, has a will from Lauderdale Co. AL. in 1843 listing his 9 girls and 4 boys. The son Jonathon is the youngest son. My GGF is James Wiley, Jonathons son.I am searching for any of the peripheral lines to try to prove this connection with the will. There are several of the married females in this will, that are very possibly listed as neighboring households on the census after the will (1850) Is there anyone out there that has made it to this will also and is at a standstill? Thanks....D.
Would you know how to get to the mouth of Blue Water Creek? It is near Center Star. Thomas Graves Coffee settled there in early 1800s. He and his wife, Mary Knight Coffee, are buried in Fritts, Coffee Cemetery. An acquaintenance took me there about 20 years ago and I could not find it last summer. We are going tup this Friday and Saturday and would like to find it. I have township, range and section if that would help. Betty.
Steve, According to Sandra Sockwell's "Place names of Colbert and Lauderdale Counties, AL": LA Highland City. This nineteenth-century comm. was on Waterloo Rd. and close to Brush Creek, east of what is now Wright comm., in S1, T2S R14W (Lauderdale Co Comm. Min. Dec. 1860: 169-170 ). There was a brush arbor for a church here, called Ginhouse Hollow Church, and a cotton gin in this hilly terrain (Hanback). Descriptive name. ******************************************* Hope this helps, Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: Stephen Cooper <scooper75@mindspring.com> To: <ALLAUDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 7:36 AM Subject: [ALLAUDER] HIGHLAND, ALABAMA > Researching the HOWELL families of Lauderdale County, Alabama and another > researcher has sent me the date of the marriage of Katie Howell (Lauderdale, > Alabama) to James Paul Poindexter (Hardin County, Tennessee) . Hi List, James Berry Hobbs' parents may be Hiram Hobbs and Susannah English. They were married in Lauderdale Co., AL on Jan 13, 1821. Does anyone have anything on this family? If you have Hiram's family I would like to have his children's names so I can rule out them as parents of James Berry or Berry as some say was his name. Jim Skaggs
I am trying to find information on Mark Wilson Smith. He was born abt 1832 in Tennessee according to census records. He was married to Rachael Malinda Eastep in 1856 and then to her sister Martha A. Eastep in 1869. He had two children with Rachael Jesse Franklin Smith born 1861 and Samuel H. born in 1862, born were born in Lauderdale Co., I think. He and Martha had three children Addison Kirby, Maggie, and Thomas B. Smith. Jesse Franklin was my great-grandfather. I do not know any of the family of his siblings. Any help in this family would be helpful. Jesse Franklin lived in Limestone Co. Part of the family is buried in Hurricane Cemetery. I do not know when Mark died or where he or his wives are buried. Thanks for any help, Cathy
Reply to Terry Williams, I am researching the Cottrell and Lovell families of Lawrence County, Tn and Lauderdale County, Al. I am descended from James Lovell, and William R. Lovell. William married Sarah Cottrell, daughter of William and Elizabeth Cottrell. I believe William Cottrell died prior to 1850. >From these two families, the following joined Company H, 50th Infantry in Lauderdale County: J. R. Cottrell, K. D. Cottrell, W. E. Cottrell, James Lovell, Reuben Lovell, and W. R. Lovell. Wayne Horton Marshall, Tx
I need help in researching the family of Catherine (Katie) Howell Poindexter. I do not know the name of her husband, _____________ Poindexter or where they lived and died. I have not been able to find their marriage license in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Catherine (Katie) Howell is listed on the Lauderdale County, Alabama Census for 1860 as being 10 years old, and on the 1850 Census as being 2 years old, making her born about 1848 to 1850. The 1850 Census Book has a mistake and list the family as Harvell instead of Howell. My only information is on the headstone of Katie's parents, which list the names of their children and Katie H. Poindexter is listed as one of the children. Katie's parents were Phillip Howell and Mary (Polly) Wesson. They are buried in Lauderdale County, Florence, Alabama at Wesley's Chapel Cemetery. Their are no dates on the headstone, but I would believe that the dates are between about 1860- 1900. Thanks to anyone with any information. Christian F. Fink, his spouse, Mary Louisa, and his daughters, Bertha Emma and Virginia Louisa, moved from Philadelphia to Youngstown, OH. His spouse died in Youngstown in 1877. Christian and his daughters then moved to Florence, AL where Virginia married John Fladd in 1882. Christian married Elisa Ehler in 1888 and had a daughter, Hulda Florence. Christian, Elisa, Bertha, and Hulda moved to Hamilton, OH in 1890. John Fladd and Virginia had at least one son, Fred. Virginia must have died before 1897, because John re-married; and Fred moved to Hamilton, OH and lived with Bertha and her husband, Conrad Linz. Christian, Elisa, and Hulda moved to Arkansas, where Christian died in 1901. (Most of this information was gleaned from Christian's Civil War pension file.) If anyone else is researching these people, please let me know. (Christian and Mary were originally from Switzerland. They immigrated in 1853. Elisa was from Germany.)

I am searching for the parents and siblings of Josiah L. Lindsey born April 5, 1805 NC. His obituary is as follows: Died at his home near Elmo, TX on August 18, 1880, Deacon Josiah Lindsey in the eighty-fifth year of his age. Brother Lindsey was born near Raleigh, NC. When quite young his parents moved to Lauderdale Co. AL where he experienced a hope in Christ in early life, and in August 1823 he joined the Old School Baptists at Mill Creek Church. On the 26th of November following, he was married to Miss Henrietta "Ritty" Harder, who was at that time a member of the same church with him,.........Brother Lindsey moved to Itawamba Co. MS, 1837, he went into the constitution of a church there and was ordained deacon. In the year 1869, he with his entire family of children and grand- children moved to Kaufman Co. TX and settled on the place where he died....." Has anyone in their research happened on information that might help determine who Josiah's parents and siblings might be. Any thoughts?? As stated in the obit, Josiah lived in Lauderdale Co. AL and Itawamba Co. MS before moving to Kaufman Co. TX. In both AL and MS there were SC Lindsey's living in the general area. This leads one to believe that there is a possible connection. Sorry for the long post. If anyone has ideas, please let me know. Sincerely, Cynthia Chandler East Peoria, IL
