    2. Steve Cooper
    3. Connecting families of interest: Witherspoon, Howell, Wesson, Chedester/Chidester, Montague Hello: I am not related to the Witherspoon family but my wife had a cousin , Bennie Howell (female) that I have done some research on and I have found that she was raised by the James G. Witherspoon family. Of interest to those who research the Witherspoon family's of Texas, I have found that one child (Minnie) of J.G. and H.C. Witherspoon is buried here in Lauderdale County, Alabama with the family of James H. and Jane Witherspoon. There are 2 different Minnie Witherspoon graves at the Richardson Cemetery in Waterloo, Alabama. This is how they are listed in "Some Lauderdale County, Alabama CEMETERY RECORDS by Jill K. Garrett and Iris H. McClain. WITHERSPOON Minnie, dau. of J.G. and H.C., 16 May 1872---- 18 Nov. 1875. Marked "Minnie's grave". Minnie, dau. of Rev. J.H. and Jane, 14 Feb. 1853----18 Sept. 1970. All of this Witherspoon families graves at the Richardson Cemetery are said to have been removed from the Witherspoon Cemetery nearby and placed in the Richardson Cemetery when land was flooded by T.V.A. I think this was in the early 1930's. WHAT I NEED Can anyone give me any information on Bennie Howell ? Bennie was the daughter of Benjamin Howell and Sarah Witherspoon. I think Sarah was the sister of Harriet (H.C.) listed above. When Sarah died and a little later Benjamin died, Bennie seems have been sent to Texas to live with Harriet and James G. and family. Oh yes, Harriet was a Witherspoon before she married a Witherspoon cousin, James G. With help from several others, I have traced Bennie Howell to marriage to a Frank Chedester. They don't seem to have had any children. They ran some type of business in the Britton area of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Frank died in 1939 and Bennie died in 1955. I found their graves in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma this past summer. They are buried in the Britton Cemetery, but not buried next to each other. One person sent me information that James G. Witherspoon died at the home of his niece Mrs. Frank Chedester. These fellow researchers have given me information that I never will be! able to repay. I would like information on these Witherspoon's and Bennie Howell Chedester and husband Frank. I am hopeing that maybe someone might have some photos or other things that they might share. It is my guess that Bennie never knew her HOWELL family as she was very small when she left Lauderdale County, Alabama and Hardin County, Tennessee. I believe that she was probably unknown to many of her cousins here. I plan to put my information on her in a family file at our library in Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama. Thanks for any help anyone can send me. Steve Cooper Cloverdale, Alabama STEVECOOPER75@COMCAST.NET

    3. I am trying to find the parents of a Howell McClain. He is listed on the 1880 census for Lauderdale Co. living with a (Howell) Jackson Rayburn as his nephew. He was three years old at the time. There is also a Wilson McClain and a Mattie Rayburn who were married in 1880 on this census. I believe that this is John Wilson McClain, who was Howell McClain's father (he went by Wilson and Mack McCklain). However, I do not know If this Mattie Rayburn was his mother as they were just married in 1880 and Howell was born in 1877. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows of these McClain's or Rayburns. Their families all originated in TN. Thanks Charlotte McClain Christensen

    1. [ALLAUDER] Searching for Crowley/Croley in AL/TN
    2. Rootsnut
    3. Researchers, My husband's grandmother was Sarah Jane CROWLEY Sides from Limestone County, Alabama. She was married to Ossie Otto Sides in 1919. Sarah Jane was the daughter of William Crowley/Croley and Rosa DAVIS Crowley. They had four children that I am aware of: Sarah Jane CROWLEY Sides; Ida Bell CROWLEY Haggard married to Henry Haggard from Coffee County, TN; John Collins Crowley and Richard Pryor Crowley. Rosa DAVIS died in February of 1941 in Limestone County, Alabama. Rosa was the daughter of Catherine GRAHAM and William Edward N. Davis. William Davis was the son of Gabriel Davis and Mary McLemore from Lauderdale County, Alabama. Rosa and William were married in 1897 in Limestone County, Alabama. I just received a death certificate for a William Crowley/Croley that died in June of 1950 in Limestone County, Alabama. William was a widower, born in March of 1878. The informant for William was John C. Crowley. It states that William was the son of John Crowley. Mom's name is not listed and William was born in Tennessee. I believe that William could possibly be the son of John W. Crowley and Sarah Jane LARGEN. They are the only Crowley family close to Limestone County, AL and/or Lincoln County, TN. I have found a Willie Croley that was in the home of H. Milton Largen in Lincoln County, TN in 1880. John and Sarah Crowley are in 1870 Lincoln County, TN list as John Crawley. There are some children listed. I believe that possibly John and Sarah have passed away by 1880 as I can not find them and their children are placed with the Largen family. John and Sarah were married in Madison County, Alabama in 1860 as was Samuel N. Crowley and Amanda Largen in 1860. John and Samuel are the sons of Henry Crowley and an Elizabeth. I believe Elizabeth's name to possibly be McClusky. I have found on the Madison County, AL website a Henn Croly that was married in 1836 to an Elizabeth McClusky. If you can offer any suggestions to some of my ideas or help support my beliefs or disprove them, please don't hesitate to ask. You can send replies to me at rootsnut@yahoo.com. Sincerely, Carrie S. Levi Thomas and Mary Jane Cartwright were married Oct. 22, 1868 in Lauderdale County, Alabama. They are both buried in Gravley Springs Cemetary. Family legend is that Mary Jane was either full or part Indian. We think that Levi may have been married before, but don't have any information on him prior to this marriage certificate. We also think he was a carpenter by trade, but this is only speculation. We think he traveled between his home in Lauderdale Co and Savanah, TN looking for work. They had two son, John Nelson and William Henry. William Henry Thomas married Laura Clanton. They had, I think, 5 children, one of which was my grandmother. Laura Clanton is believed to be a cousin of Ike Clanton of OK Corral fame. Any information would be greatly appreciated. >

You can contact Charlotte at ccovey@sstelco.com SARAH RICHARDSON born September 11, 1830 died October 16, 1920. Sarah married John Thomas Covey on September 1, 1846. In Itawamba County, MS. We previously thought this was the surname COOLEY. Charlotte has copies of this marriage record, and has forwarded them onto me. There is no, doubt that it is Covey. We also note that in Hiram Richardson's letter of 1884, that it looked like Cooly. From Hirams letter "My sisters, Nelly POPE and Sally COOLY live near me. Each is proud of her family as she has a right to be." The V, must of looked so much like an L. that everyone thought it to be a L.
