Hello, Lauderdale Listers, I'm a Davis researcher and believe I may have finally found my g-g-g-grandfather Joseph Davis born 1837 in Alabama. I found, using Ancestry.com's 1850 census index, a Joseph Davis who fits the bill, in Lauderdale Co., age 13, in the household of Jane Davis who was born ca. 1800 in South Carolina. This fits with Joe's 1880 and subsequent census answers - parents born in SC. Others in the household besides Jane and Joseph are: Clayborn age 18 b. AL Sarah age 11 b. AL Louisa age 9 b. AL Assuming all these kids are Jane's, and Louisa's age is accurate, Jane's husband must have died 1840-ish. Does the Thomas Davis married to Jane (who lived next door to Jane in 1850) belong to this family also? Has anyone researched this family? Does anyone know who Jane's husband was? According to Joseph's later census entries, his father was born in SC also. I am just starting to go through the previous censuses but thought I'd jump in now in case anyone else has the scoop on these folks. Thanks, Joe's g-g-g-granddaughter, Becky Thames-Simmons
Allen: Do you have a list of Nancy and William Whitehead's children? I am looking for a Nancy A. Whitehead who was born near Rogersville, Lauderdale Co. in 1840 and married Jacob R. Wilson in Center Star, 21 April 1859. The Lauderdale marriage records list her as Mary A. Whitehead, but her name was Nancy. Her sister was Jacob's first wife who died between 1856 and 1859. I am looking for information on her, too. Arlene
Joel listed Elizabeth Dawson /Davisson King Whitehead as mother of William King Whitehead in the below message. Would anyone know the parentage of Elizabeth or who her siblings were. Was she connected to Guilford/Gilford Dudley King? I am seeking any descendents of Nancy E. Grant Whitehead, wife of William Whitehead. William and Nancy lived in Lauderdale County their entire life and died in the same county. Nancy was born about 1822 in Maury County, TN. Nancy was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Grant. Thomas and Sarah lived in Maury County, TN, in an area that later became Marshall County (1836). After Thomas death in 1838, Sarah left Tennessee with the rest of the family around 1840 and moved to Pontotoc County, MS. Other Grant's who move there as well were James Davis Grant, Richard G. Grant, Mary Margaret who married David R. Looney, Levinia who married Early Reasonover, and Elizabeth who married Posey P Weaver. It appears that Nancy may not have been with them as she is noted in the Alabama records in Lauderdale County as she and William married on April 22, 1840. J. O. Tate, JP was the official. I do not know the part of the county he presided in. If you are connected in any way, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. I noticed among the Lauderdale Co,Al email archives a message which mentioned that John Burrown and Cathrine Barron once owned the French-Glover farm and lived in Lexington,Al. Does anyone know for sure that they did at one time own the farm? Tom Stephenson
STUTTS: Dr. Henry Stutts is an interesting lead. Many of the Stutts family were Union men: (1) Asa Stutts b 1832 Green Hill was a USV soldier; (2) George Washington Stutts served in USV, 18th MO Regmt; (3) Henry B. Stutts, b 1827, was Unionist as validated by his SCC claim and as witness for his Unionist father, (4) Jacob "Drummer" Stutts, b 1803; (5) John Ritter "Red Jack" Stutts b 1829, is said to have been a Neutral/Lay-out with Unionist leaning; (6) Samuel L. Stutts b 1842, USV, 18th MO Regmt; (7) Walter F. Stutts, b 1841, USV, Sgt, 2nd TN Mtd Inf; (8) William B. Stutts b 1820, Unionist per SCC claim; (9) William M. "Uncle Billy" b 1798, disputed as to whether Unionist or CSA; like many may have been on both sides during the war with a mid-course change of loyalty ??? I had the good fortune to work around Jim Stutts, Superintendant, out at the Armour/US Steel Fertilizer Works in Cherokee AL during the 1962-1963 period, and know part of this family to be "top-drawer". If anyone on the board has a good STUTTS family Civil War story, would like to know of it. Joel S. Pat & List, One of at least two references to the Physician/Yankee Spy is given by Wm L McDonald in his book "Civil War Tales of the Tennessee Valley", pg 18, to wit: "A few army surgeons came with the hospital cortege that arrived in February 1862 [CSA hospital, following the fall of Forts Henry and Donnelson; later used as Union hospital]. They were assisted in caring for the patients by a number of local physicians. One of these local doctors became a Union spy. His activities were kept secret until dispatches signed by him were discovered in the official records of the U.S. Army after the war." If no one on the list knows the answer, perhaps someone will be kind enough to phone Mr. McDonald for the answer (I've talked to him by phone but don't know him well; he has a copy of my first volume and has expressed pleasure/support for the book & series). It shows all of the roads by name and where to locate the cemeteries. I see no reason why you can't order the same thing for Limestone Co............... It only costs under $6.00 as I recall. Hi, all, The Higgins Cemetery is located in Limestone Co. AL., as is the Temperance Oak Cemetery. They are close together. The Ingram Rose and wife Sally are buried in the Temperance Oak Cemetery. not the Higgins. But some of the Roses are in the Higgins Cem. The Temperence Oak Cem. is on Temperence Oak Rd. Across from the Ole Church Building. The Higgins Cemetery is located in the Cedar Grove community near,(almost on) the Lauderdale Co. line. There is a cemetery book that lists most of the cemeteries in Limestone Co. AL. It was printed in 1993 and about all the country roads have been renamed. We would need to find an updated map of Limestone Co. AL. Hope some of this will be of some help to you. Oh,oh I almost forgot, My husband's mother was a Rose before she married. Good luck with your research. Thank You Pat, I found out today that Higgins Cemtery, is actually in Limestone County, although I haven't found the exact location yet. I think this Cemetery, has some Lauderdale County Folks buried in it, so I will be doing a survey, when I come to Lauderdale in Dec., and Jan. I am not looking for Higgins, just the Higgins Cemetery. Example of people buried there. William Henry Rose 1900-1996 and member of his family Possibly his parents, Ingram Rose born Feb 13, 1876 died Dec 15, 1971 and wife, Sarah A. Richardson Rose, born September 17, 1879 died July 15, 1971. Sarah was the daughter of Henry Poindexter Richardson born August 27, 1853 died Jan 1932. Henry Poindexter Richardson was the son of James Cecil Richardson and Mary Ann Angelina Pettus. So as you can see, this Higgins Cemetery, could be full of interesting information for us all. I will send a copy of what I find to you, for the Lauderdale Co, page. Thanks for answering me. Liz Moore >From: "Pat M. So far as I know, all the Higgins families are located in the western part of Lauderdale County. I'm not saying that there definitely is not a cemetery by this name in the east end of Lauderdale County, but if there is, I'd certainly like to know where it is located too, so if someone out there knows about this, please reply to the list. Thanks, Pat
