Houston, our Representative in Congress is from the "Illinois State Register" published at Springfield. It should be a source of congratulation? to the ____ of this district to win the high estimation for which our immediate Representative is ____. The following letter, from a gentleman of the highest standing in Washington, throws some light on the late vote in Congress, and does us more than justice to these few patriotic members from Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana, who would not desert their country in the crisis then pending. Honor is their noble names. WASHINGTON CITY, April 25, 1846 ___: The struggle is over, and the notice for the termination of the convention in relation to the north west _____ of America has passed-But how passed? It is my purpose to inform you. It is almost enough to solve the whole matter to say, that the original, true and straight out friends of the measure voted against it in its final form? and the oppo_____ of the measure including the whole Whig party, and the advocates of masterly inactivity, voted for it........ ____Houston of Ala., Cobb of Ga., Reid of N.C. and Harmansos? of La., were exceptions to the general vote of the South. They voted with Democrats of the north and nearly the whole body of Democrats of the west, against the resolution. Like the brave Spartans of the ___ of Thermopy__, they wrote victory on their shields in the moment of their fall--..... Let the West in the sorrow of defeat and loneliness of desertion, remember them to honor and gratitude. For such men the brave and disinterested Democracy of the West would peril their hearth-stones and their heads, to rescue the whole South from the terrible and bloody wrath re____ced by abolition fanaticism. Sir, you think the noble example of these patriots merit this notice, you will please publish it and oblige Your obedient servant,

Some of the Diaries of James Robert Bumpass have been transcribed and are now available for purchase. The diaries were transcribed by James Robert Bumpass' great-grandson, Kenneth R. Roaten, of Corinth, Mississippi. It took 2 years and five months to accomplish as some of the Diary pages had to be moved with a finger nail file as they were so brittle plus using a magnifying glass. The 215-page, softbound book contains many surnames from Lauderdale County, Alabama; Tishomingo County, Mississippi; and Alcorn County, Mississippi. Also highlighted from the diaries is information on various churches, schools, geographic locations, anecdotes, photocopies of his original handwriting, and pictures of some of his original diaries. The book includes a family group sheet for James Robert Bumpass and group sheets for each of his 11 children. This item can be purchased from the Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 273, 203 E. Quitman Street, Iuka, MS 38852. Tel.: (662) 423-3500. Price: $35.00, shipping $5.00. Below might answer some questions: James Robert Bumpass was born Jan 02 1854 in Waterloo, Alabama, and died 11 Nov 1936. He and his wife, Cleopatra Whittle Bumpass, are buried at the Union Cemetery in Alcorn County. These transcriptions start with 1890 through May 28, 1928. I started collecting his diaries from different relatives, and while there are probably more, all I have acquired are included in the book. I am positive that there are many more of the Bumpass diaries scattered around with some of his distant Bumpass family relatives. Before my cousin Troy Bumpass passed away, (who donated the land for the Corinth Park) told me that there are more Diaries out there someplace within the families. I still have one of his original diaries and one of his Bibles which were given to me by one of my relatives who let me look through his father's old trunk. I just haven't located any other Diaries yet. I met many Bumpass researchers at the dedication ceremony for Gabriel Bumpass a number of years back in Waterloo, Ala. Good Morning Everyone, This notice was on the Lawrence Co TN mailing list. If you are on that list, please forgive the duplication. If you have family in that area, mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Pat _______________________________ The Lawrence County Genealogical Society will hold their sixth Family History Fair on Saturday, June 25, 2005. If you are interested in genealogy, this is a great opportunity to meet new people who are researching on your same family lines. We have had tremendous response to our fair in past years, and hope that everyone will continue to make it a great success. Each year we have had over one hundred people in attendance, with researchers from twelve or more states. Information on about eighty-five Lawrence County families has been displayed on the various tables reserved by researchers. There were also vendors with many books for sell on Lawrence County, Giles County, and other surrounding counties. All who have attended our previous fairs had a wonderful time swapping information. A copy machine will be available for copies of any information you need copied. So bring, family charts, notebooks, photographs, family stories, computers, etc. and join in the fun. If you are bringing information to share with others or books to sale, tables are available for free, but we do ask that you please make a reservation in order for us to be able to determine how many tables need to be set up. Including the surnames of all the families you will have information on or the books you have for sell, will enable us to make a fair directory in advance. If you wish to reserve a table for the Family History Fair, please fill out the form at this website <http://home.lorettotel.net/~lcarchives/regform.htm> and return to the Lawrence County Genealogical Society, 218 N. Military Ave., Suite B-1, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. The form must be returned no later than Wednesday, June 22, 2005, so we can prepare a directory listing the surnames you will have information on at your table or the books you will have for sell. You may also email or call in the information to me at the address number below. It takes a lot of preparation and work weeks before the fair and on the day of the fair to do this each year. If you would like to volunteer to help on one of the committees listed below, even if you do not live in Lawrence County, please contact the society at 218 N. Military Ave., Suite B-1, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464; phone - (931)766-1576; email - lcarchives@lorettotel.net <mailto:lcarchives@lorettotel.net> 1) The committees are collecting money at the admission table; 2) working at the society's table taking care of new members, renewals and selling journals; 3) working at the books for sale table; 4) set-up and take down committee; 5) copy machine. Each of the shifts are only 1 1/2 to 2 hours and leaves you plenty of time to browse the tables and meet other researchers. If you wish to join the society, you can contact me at the same addresses above or go to this website <http://home.lorettotel.net/~lcarchives/lcgs.htm> and click on Society info and membership form. Hope to see many of you at the Fair. Thanks Kathy Niedergeses, Chair Lawrence County Genealogical Society DIRECTIONS: It will be at the Lawrence County High School in their cafeteria. I am looking for information about property own by Richard Williams in Lauderdale County between 1880 and 1900. It was located about a mile west of Lexington and had a mill on Little Bluewater creek. Where is the best place to look for this record? Frank
