    3. Dale: Here's what the Lamar Co. website has about the formation of the county: Lamar County was formed from Marion, Fayette, and Pickens counties in February of 1867 and named Jones County. In November of the same year, the county was abolished, but was recreated in October 1868 as Sanford County. The name was changed to Lamar County in 1877 to honor Senator Lamar of Mississippi. Depending on where your people were located, you could possibly find a marriage record in Fayette, Marion or Pickens Counties.
